Looking for Statistics? Try Statista!

This semester we are highlighting some of the databases most useful to business students. First database up: Statista!

From the website: “All of Statista’s charts are made available under the Creative Commons License CC BY-ND 3.0 and may be used and re-published without charge by all commercial and non-commercial websites. The only thing asked for in return is proper attribution to Statista.” 

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under S in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Statistics
    Includes data on: companies, countries, products, demographics, advertising, etc.
    Industry reports
    A variety of industries, including popular categories such as: Sports & Recreation, Consumer Goods and FMCG, Media & Advertising, Technology & Telecommunications, and Internet
  • Dossiers
    On about 80,000 popular topics. Provided in PowerPoint format
    Infographics – news Infographics released daily
  • Tips for searching:
    Use the search box to do a keyword search
    Within a search use the left sidebar to limit your search to Statistics, Studies, Dossiers & Industry-Reports, Topics, or Infographics
    Statista is really fun to browse as it is so visual
    Mouse over the drop down menus “Our Services”, “Markets & Topics”, and “Infographics” to further explore this database.

Database of the Week: Vault

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: Vault Vault

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under V in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Internship information
  • Company info, rankings and reviews – includes info such as: geographic reach, operations, sales and marketing, financial performance, strategy, competitors, and company news
  • Information on Industries and Professions. Industry info includes: overview of the industry, background, structure, outlook, and resources and associations.
  • Resume, Interviewing, Cover letter, Networking tips and advice

Tips for searching:

  • Use the search bar on the top right
  • Select Companies at the top to see a list of companies by industry or search for a specif company
  • Select Internships at the top to search for internships and see lists of internships
  • Select Schools at the top to see rankings of Undergraduate, Business Schools or Law Schools, or to search for a specific school.

Database of the Week: Proquest Historical Annual Reports

The database: Proquest Historical Annual Reports Historical_Annual_Reports

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under P in the databases A-Z list.

Annual reports (1844-current) available for over 800 companies, 43,000 reports, 1.3M pages. Searchable puff images with indexed data such as: financial, Fortune 500 ranking, industry classification, key people, geographic location, auditor and related companies. It can also be browsed by company name, related names, industry or date..

Use it to find:

  • Annual reports, dating back to 1844
  • Company histories
  • Historical financials

Tips for searching:

  • Do a Basic Search using the search box
  • Or do an Advanced search – and look up companies or codes from a list
  • Or Browse by Company, Industry or Date

Uniworld Online, […] offer[s] two unique directories to unravel the maze of “who operates where” and “who owns whom” regardless of whether you’re sourcing, building your business, selling, tracking competitors, or seeking employment with a multinational firm.  With Uniworld Online, you’ll find contact information for headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates of the multinational firm. Since 1955, it’s all we’ve done and we do it well.  All of the firms we list are multinational firms.

The database: PsycINFO PsycINFO

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under P in the databases A-Z list.
The PsycINFO database covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. PsycINFO’s coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1500 journals in more than 35 languages, and book chapters and books in the English language. Over 50,000 references are added annually. Popular literature is excluded.

Use it to find:

  • Journal articles, book chapters, book reviews,  editorials
  • Clinical case reports, empirical studies, literature reviews
  • Includes disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics,etc
  • Includes topics such as: Advertising, Marketing, Decision Making, Consumer Behavior, Job performance, Organizational Behavior, etc.

Tips for searching:

  • Use the Easy Search or Advanced search options
  • Use the sidebar on the left to narrow your results

The database: ImportGenius import_genius

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under I in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • US Export Data  – U.S. export data dating back to January 1, 2014.
  • Complete US Shipping / Import Data – nearly 100 million shipping records going back to November 2006
  • Data includes: product, shipper, departure date, weight, quantity, vessel, ports, container number, etc.

  • Use the drop down menu to Search by: product, shipper, shipper address, destination country, foreign port, vessel name, container number, bill of lading, distance from zipcode, zipcode range.
  • Adjust date range

Database of the Week: IBISWorld

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: IBISWorld IBISWorld

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under I in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • US Industry Reports – The “NAICS collection analyzes industries at the 5-digit level offering the latest content on 700 industries. Each report consists of 30 to 40 pages of key statistics and analysis on market characteristics, operating conditions, current and forecast performance, major industry participants and more”.
  • US Industry iExpert Summaries – These summaries” condense[] the integral elements from [the] industry reports into bite-sized paragraphs, graphics and tables, highlighting the key issues with a Q&A section
  • US Specialized Industry Reports – Additional industries not covered in standard NAICS industries.
  • Global Industry Reports – currently around 70 of these
  • US Business Environment Profiles – The “Business Environment Profiles provide insight into [ ] key drivers, which include exchange rates, commodity prices, interest rates, weather conditions, consumer attitudes, demographics and many more”.

Tips for searching:

  • Browse by clicking on the report type headings – and then by industry sector
  • If you know your industry’s NAICS code search using the first 5 digits.
  • Feel free to do a keyword search for an industry, company or product
  • Use the magnifying glass icon to search within a report
