The database: Uniworld: American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries uniworld

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under A in the databases A-Z list.

Uniworld Online, […] offer[s] two unique directories to unravel the maze of “who operates where” and “who owns whom” regardless of whether you’re sourcing, building your business, selling, tracking competitors, or seeking employment with a multinational firm.  With Uniworld Online, you’ll find contact information for headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates of the multinational firm. Since 1955, it’s all we’ve done and we do it well.  All of the firms we list are multinational firms.

Use it to find:

  • American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries
  • Foreign Firms Operating in the United States

Tips for searching:

  • Search by: country, region, state, keyword, zip code, radius, industry codes, revenue, number of employees
  • Filter results to show only: public firms, private firms, US branch locations, etc.

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under M in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Company information on both public and big private companies
  • Business summary information – history, properties, subsidiaries, long-term debt, capital stock, business segments
  • Executive information
  • Ownership information
  • Equity pricing and reports
  • Access to company news
  • List of company competitors
  • Quick access to Annual Reports and other SEC filings
  • Industry reports: automotive, banking, food & beverage, heavy construction, insurance, media, , pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, healthcare, oil & gas, retail, etc.
  • Company News

Tips for searching:

  • Search by company name or ticker symbol
  • Use the “Advanced Search” to search fro companies by: state, city, zip code, year incorporated, number of employees, number of shareholders, auditor, etc.
  • Use the tabs across the top to do a: executive search, government filings search, report search, ownership search or bond search

Database of the Week: ReferenceUSA

Each week we will highlight one of the many RefernceUSAdatabases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: ReferenceUSA

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under S in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Directory information for 24 Million US Businesses
  • Often includes Executive Name, Address, Phone Number, Sales Volume, Employee Size
  • US Consumers/Lifestyle Database
  • US Jobs/Internships Database

Custom Search

Tips for searching:

  • Use the “Quick Search” to search by Company Name, Executive Name, City, State or Phone
  • Use the “Custom Search” to build a more complex search.  Can refine by Business type (Industry Code / Group), Geography (Radius, County, Map Based Search, etc), Business Size, Ownership, and more

Database of the Week: LexisNexis Academic

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: LexisNexis Academic LexisNexis

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under L in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Information on both public and private companies
  • Journal and newspaper articles
  • Company profiles (from Hoovers)
    • lists of executives, company hierarchy, financials, mergers & acquisitions, etc.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings
  • Legal information
  • Company Dossiers – create lists of companies

Tips for searching:

  • Use the search box to search everything in the database (newspapers, company directories, legal news, magazines, journals, etc.)
  • Use the “Get Company Info” box Company_infoon the bottom right, to search company profiles
  • Click the “Company Dossier” link at the bottom of the “Get Company Info” box, and then “Create Company List” Company_List

SEC Releases a New Search Engine

The SEC has released IDEA, a more user friendly search portal. IDEA stands for Interactive Data Electronic Applications and will eventually replace the EDGAR database. IDEA offers faster retrieval of public company and mutual fund information. In addition, some information can be imported into spreadsheets for analysis.
