How To Set Up EndNote To Find Full Text

Posted on September 28, 2022October 4, 2022 by Sarah Andrews

Here is how to set up EndNote to find full text so you can save entire articles in your library.

To set up Find Full Text:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click on Find Full Text.
  3. In the Open URL Path box, enter:
    https://search.lib.uiowa.edu/openurl/01IOWA/01IOWA_SERVICES
  4. If you are using EndNote from off-campus, you will need to enter https://login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu beside the box labeled Authentication URL.

NOTE:  It is advised that you do not select the box “automatically invoke find full text on newly imported references” that appears at the bottom of the box. Attaching full text for all references is often unnecessary and will interfere with use of library during the process.

Find Full Text:

  1. Select the desired references in your EndNote Library.
  2. Right click and then select Find Full Text from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click OK on the copyright notice. EndNote will begin looking for full-text and will track its progress in the blue side panel.
  4. When EndNote finds a PDF, a paperclip appears in the attachment column, and the PDF appears in the File Attachments field of the reference. Click on the PDF to open the article. PDFs are stored in the Endnote library’s .data file, in a folder called PDF.
  5. If EndNote can only find an HTML version of the article, a link to that version appears in the reference’s URL field.

Enable UI Link

By enabling UI Link in EndNote, you can easily get to the full-text of an article from the EndNote record

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click on URLS and Links.
  3. Paste the following into the box labeled ISI Base URL:
    https://login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/login?url=http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi
  4. You can now click OK.
  5. To use UI Link, click on a record, then go to the References menu and select URL and then OpenURL Link. Use UI Link to find full text, or to launch an interlibrary loan request, if the item is not available electronically.

Set up EndNote to Find Full-Text

EndNote can attempt to locate the full text (PDF or HTML) of articles in your library. Full text availability is limited to journals to which the UI Libraries subscribe electronically and for which full text is available. If the Find Full-Text function does not locate a given article, try the UILink option below. (NOTE: this service produces error messages when used off-campus. Clicking either “yes” or “no” on error messages and signing in when you see the login screen should allow this to work from off-campus)

To set up Find Full Text:

  1. From the EndNote menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click on Find Full Text in the left frame.
  3. In the Open URL Path box, enter:
    https://search.lib.uiowa.edu/openurl/01IOWA/01IOWA_SERVICE
  4. If you are using EndNote from off-campus, you will need to enter https://login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu beside the box labeled Authentication URL.

To find full-text:

  1. Select the desired references in your EndNote Library.
  2. From the References menu, select Find Full Text.
  3. Click OK on the copyright notice. EndNote will begin looking for full-text and will track its progress in the side panel.
  4. When EndNote finds a PDF, a paperclip appears in the attachment column, and the PDF appears in the File Attachments field of the reference. It also appears in the far right pane when the reference is open. To open the PDF, click the icon in the File Attachments field or click the “book” icon in the lower corner of the open reference. PDFs are stored in the Endnote library’s .data file, in a folder called PDF.
  5. If EndNote can only find an HTML version of the article, a link to that version appears in the reference’s URL field.

By enabling InfoLink in EndNote, you can easily get to the full-text of an article from the EndNote record, without attaching the PDF.

Enable UI Link

  1. From the EndNote menu, select Preferences
  2. Click on URLS and Links
  3. In the box labeled ISI Base URL, copy and paste this into the field:
    https://login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/login?url=http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi
  1. To use UI Link, select a record, then go to the References menu and select URL and then OpenURL Link. The UI Link window should appear.

Linking PDFs or Other Files to EndNote References

Sometimes, EndNote won’t be able to locate a PDF.  In that case, if you have the PDF, you can manually attach it.  You can also attach other types of files to citations.  The file can be on your own computer or on the Internet.

  1. Open the reference to which you wish to link.
  2. To link to a file on your computer, select a citation, go to the References menu and choose File Attachments and then Attach File…. Locate the file and click Open.
  3. To link to a file on the Internet, simply type (or paste) the URL into the reference’s URL field.

Preventing Zoombombing | Tips from Office of Teaching & Learning

Posted on April 2, 2020 by Sarah Andrews

The Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology provided several important privacy tips to prevent Zoom-based classes and meetings from being disrupted.

  • Do not post the link to your Zoom meeting on social media. Instead, share the link privately with those you wish to invite.
  • Mute all participants.
  • Disable the “Share Screen” option for all participants.

Other changes you could try:

  • Making the Zoom meeting password-protected.
  • Disabling the “Join Before Host” feature.
  • Locking the Zoom meeting after everyone has arrived to prevent others from randomly joining.

More information is available on the Zoom Meeting Privacy Options Page of the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology website. If you have questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk.

Got EndNote Desktop? Got Mac? | Read this before upgrading to Catalina OS

Posted on January 17, 2020 by Sarah Andrews

The latest Mac operating system, Catalina, runs only 64-bit apps. While the original version of EndNote X9 is a 32-bit app, the latest EndNote upgrade is a 64-bit app.

If you have EndNote Desktop on your computer and have not yet upgraded to Catalina:
1. Upgrade your EndNote to the newest version (X9.3.2). In EndNote Desktop, click on “Check for Updates” under the “Help” menu.
2. Upgrade to Catalina

If you upgraded to Catalina and now your EndNote no longer works:
1. Download the most recent version of EndNote from the Software Download site.
2. Find the EndNote installer program in the downloads directory of Finder.
3. Install EndNote.  You will get a message warning about installing a program from an unidentified developer.
4. Go to System Preferences and select Security & Privacy.  From there, tell your Mac to install the software.  Your admin password will be required to install the software.

Questions? Contact your librarian.

EndNote Desktop is available to all University of Iowa faculty, staff, residents, and graduate students.

Office365.uiowa.edu requires two-step log on | Starting Tuesday, June 25, 2019

Posted on June 24, 2019June 26, 2019 by Sarah Andrews

Beginning Tuesday, June 25, users of https://office365.uiowa.edu will be required to use the two-step log on.

If you access Office365 from the Hardin Library computers, you will be required to use the two-step log on each time you log on to the computer.  Do not check the “remember me for 30 days” box on shared computers for security reasons.

If you access Office365 from your own computer, you will be required to use the two-step log on, but can check the “remember me for 30 days” box.

If you do not have a cell phone, or get poor reception at the Hardin Library, you can generate codes from a computer on-campus which will allow you to log in with two-step.  See https://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/102359 for instructions.

Information Technology Services (ITS) information about Duo Two-Step login:  https://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/106591.

If you need help with two-step login, please contact ITS: https://its.uiowa.edu/contact .

AT&T Wireless retired July 16, guests now use UI-Guest

Posted on July 17, 2018August 8, 2018 by Sarah Andrews

The AT&T Wireless guest network available on the UI Campus was retired on July 15, 2018.

UI-Guest is the new campus guest network.  Please connect to UI-Guest for free guest wifi.  This network is not secure, so we do not recommend using it for shopping, banking, or any activity requiring personal or financial information.  If you are a guest on campus, you may receive a computer guest ID that will work with wired computers in libraries by applying at a service desk.  You must be able to provide a state-issued photo ID, driver’s license,  or passport in order to get a computer pass.eduroam wifi logo

Eduroam wireless is available to UI affiliates.  You may need to do some extra setup in order for Eduroam to work on your device.  See https://its.uiowa.edu/wireless for more instructions or call the ITS Helpdesk at 319-384-4357.  When you log on to Eduroam you will use Iowa hawkid@uiowa.edu and password.
