Database of the Week: Key Business Ratios

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: D&B Key Business Ratios

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under K in the databases A-Z list.

From their website”Key Business Ratios on the Web (KBR) provides immediate online access to competitive benchmarking data. This powerful tool lets researchers examine industry benchmarks compiled from D&B®’s database of public and private companies, featuring 14 key business ratios (users choose a one-year or three-year set of ratios) for public and private companies in 800 lines of business.” KBR

Use it to find:

  • Industry ratios
  • Company information
  • Solvency Ratios
  • Efficiency Ratios
  • Profitability Ratios

Tips for searching:

  • To search for industry ratios – type an industry code (SIC or NAICs)
  • To display company information – click to company sub-tab of the reports section, sort by company name, SIC, line of Business, DUNS number, NAIC, MSA, City, Sate or Country.
  • You can also perform a comparative analysis
  • Use the Ratios tab to calculate key business ratios (solvency, efficiency and profitability)
  • Use the Help Guides – top right corner

Kompass is a business to business import and export directory that enables you to gather information about other companies and promote your company in the global marketplace. Kompass business to business directory has 2.3M companies in 70 countries referenced by 57.000 product & service keywords 860,000 trade names, 4.6M executive names.

  • Trade names
  • Executives

Tips for searching:

  • Use the quick search bar
  • Filter using the left hand sidebar, by: Categories (company activity, company name, executives, etc.), Location, Number of Employees, and Activities.

The database: ImportGenius import_genius

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under I in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • US Export Data  – U.S. export data dating back to January 1, 2014.
  • Complete US Shipping / Import Data – nearly 100 million shipping records going back to November 2006
  • Data includes: product, shipper, departure date, weight, quantity, vessel, ports, container number, etc.

  • Use the drop down menu to Search by: product, shipper, shipper address, destination country, foreign port, vessel name, container number, bill of lading, distance from zipcode, zipcode range.

Database of the Week: IBISWorld

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: IBISWorld IBISWorld

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under I in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • US Industry Reports – The “NAICS collection analyzes industries at the 5-digit level offering the latest content on 700 industries. Each report consists of 30 to 40 pages of key statistics and analysis on market characteristics, operating conditions, current and forecast performance, major industry participants and more”.
  • US Industry iExpert Summaries – These summaries” condense[] the integral elements from [the] industry reports into bite-sized paragraphs, graphics and tables, highlighting the key issues with a Q&A section
  • US Specialized Industry Reports – Additional industries not covered in standard NAICS industries.
  • Global Industry Reports – currently around 70 of these
  • US Business Environment Profiles – The “Business Environment Profiles provide insight into [ ] key drivers, which include exchange rates, commodity prices, interest rates, weather conditions, consumer attitudes, demographics and many more”.

  • Browse by clicking on the report type headings – and then by industry sector
  • If you know your industry’s NAICS code search using the first 5 digits.
  • Feel free to do a keyword search for an industry, company or product
  • Use the magnifying glass icon to search within a report

  • Journal articles
  • Book chapters

Tips for searching:

  • Browse publication by subject: note – Business, Management & Accounting AND Economics, Econometrics & Finance heading
  • Use search bars at the top to search for, key words, authors, journal or book tile, volume, issue, page
  • Try the advanced search to further refine your search
  • Once you have done a first search, use the refine filters on the left hand side. Refine by: Year, Publication title, Topic, Content type, etc.
