Linda Lococo | Longest Serving Staff Member | Retired December 1, 2021

Posted on December 2, 2021December 2, 2021 by Sarah Andrews

Linda Lococo, Hardin Library’s longest serving staff member, retired on December 1 with 43 years of service.

Linda worked in Hardin’s Interlibrary Loan Department, borrowing materials from other libraries for University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students as well as fulfilling materials requested from libraries around the world.

Linda’s favorite part of her job was the detective work required to find articles when very little or incorrect information was provided by users.  When Linda first started in interlibrary loan, she typed up requests on paper forms and then used print indexes to find holdings of libraries to send the requests to.  Now, most of this work is automated, but we still manually scan print materials at a large scanner.

Linda is looking forward to having more time with her husband Joe, a retired nurse, and the rest of her family.  She has lots of home projects lined up to work on and more time for reading!

Libraries Graduate Student Scholarship Winner | Alex Hsieh from Hardin Library

Posted on June 24, 2021June 24, 2021 by Sarah Andrews

Alex Hsieh, College of Dentistry Student, has won a University of Iowa Libraries graduate student scholarship.  Alex works at the Hardin Library.

“Making sure our library patrons feel cared for has been a goal of mine while working at Hardin Library, and that is a philosophy I will carry into my career as a dentist.  In both situations, a patron/patient who feels comfortable and welcome will get the most out of their visit and will more likely come back again!”

Read more about Alex, and our other scholarship winner Sara Jensen in Bindings.

Congratulations Graduate! | Joe Opferman | BBA, Accounting

Posted on May 12, 2021 by Sarah Andrews

headshot Joe OpfermanCongratulations to student assistant Joe Opferman, who is receiving a Bachelor of Business Arts in Accounting, May, 2021!

Activities During Undergraduate
I was a proud member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. I sat on the Treasury Committee to help the fraternity maintain their budget. I also sat on the Philanthropy Committee to plan fund raisers for local charities.

Future Plans
After graduation I plan to intern for an accounting firm known as PricewaterhouseCoopers(PwC) in Chicago, Illinois as an Audit Intern. Following the internship I will return to The University of Iowa to receive my Masters’ of Accountancy. After receiving my masters degree, I plan to sit for the CPA exam. Following the exam, I hope to work for a public accounting firm full-time.

Joe Opferman outside in woodsWhat Joe Enjoys About Hardin Library
Hardin Library has the kindest staff and co-workers. Each day I was happy to have conversations with co-workers with different majors, areas of expertise, and backgrounds. The staff were very accommodating to my busy schedule for the three years I worked here. They knew that being a student came first and were always willing to work with me to further my knowledge. I truly enjoyed the research projects as they served as fantastic resume builders, starting early on in my college career. Although I plan to return in the fall, Hardin Library has been a fantastic place to work during my undergrad.

Richard (Dick) Eimas

Richard (Dick) Eimas, former curator of the John Martin Rare Book Room, passed away on November 19th, 2020 following a battle with cancer.

Dick was the original curator of the John Martin Rare Book Room, a position he held from 1975 until his retirement in 2002. Dick was passionate about the Rare Book Room, and a valued colleague. He was also a respected supervisor who listened and supported the needs of those who reported to him.

He was the editor and primary contributor to the second and third editions of Heirs of Hippocrates, an annotated book catalog of the most important works in the Rare Book Room. This catalog is still regarded as an important reference work and source of authority by historians, book dealers and bibliophiles. He made purchasing decisions and supervised the expansion of the room, shaping the collection alongside Dr. John Martin, the Rare Book Room’s original benefactor. He published numerous articles about works in the collection and gave presentations to a wide variety of audiences. He was an active member of the prestigious Osler Society.

Dick Eimas was bright, friendly and interesting, an asset to the library and to the Iowa community. Though he left the university nearly two decades ago, he will be missed.
