Database of the Week: Statista

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: Statista

“All of Statista’s charts are made available under the Creative Commons License CC BY-ND 3.0 and may be used and re-published without charge by all commercial and non-commercial websites. The only thing asked for in return is proper attribution to Statista.”

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under S in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

Statistics
- Includes data on: companies, countries, products, demographics, advertising, etc.
Industry reports
- A variety of industries, including popular categories such as: Sports & Recreation, Consumer Goods and FMCG, Media & Advertising, Technology & Telecommunications, and Internet
Dossiers
- On about 1000 popular topics. Provided in PowerPoint format
Infographics – news Infographics released daily

Tips for searching:

Use the search box to do a keyword search
Within a search use the left sidebar to limit your search to Statistics, Studies, Dossiers & Industry-Reports, Topics, or Infographics
Statista is really fun to browse as it is so visual
Mouse over the drop down menus “Our Services”, “Markets & Topics”, and “Infographics” to further explore this database.

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: Business Source Complete

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under B in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

Full-text business journal articles
- Disciplines include: marketing, management, accounting, finance, economics, etc.
Company profiles (from Marketline and Medtrack)
Industry profiles (from Datamonitor)
Country economic reports (from EIU and Global Insight)
Conference proceedings
Trade publications

Tips for searching:

Use the search box to do a keyword search
Use the “Browse” links to limit your search to company information, company profiles, industry profiles, market research reports, or business videos
Use “Advanced Search” to limit by publication type or search by NAICS/Industry codes

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: Mintel Oxygen

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under M in the databases A-Z list. You do need to agree to the Terms of Use and create an individual profile with your @uiowa.edu email address before you can gain access.

Use it to find:

Industry reports
Market research
Consumer reports
Product information
International information, but strongest in US and UK coverage

Tips for searching:

Scroll over “Category overview” at the top to see sectors, themes, and demographics that are covered
Use the search box at the top and type in an industry, or even a company
Use the sidebar on the left to limit your results by content (reports), sector, or demographics

Use the search box to quickly find news articles
Use the “Company/Markets” tab, and select Company for a quick company search

Media Table Now Connectable to Mac’s

Have a MacBook, iPhone, or iPad? Do you need to display info. at a group meeting or study? You can now connect to the Library’s media table. Just ask at the Business Library’s main desk for a Mac adapter.

Census Statistics during the Shutdown

Oxford University Press and the Social Explorer team will open up access to Social Explorer http://www.socialexplorer.com/ for the next two weeks. Social Explorer offers users Census data from 1790 to 2010 and American Community Survey data from 2005 to 2012. Just set up a username and password to use the database.

Bloomberg BNA, Trial Subscription: Legal & Business Issues and More

The University Libraries are providing a trial subscription to Bloomberg BNA. This Law School Professional Information Center offers valuable resources for law school librarians, faculty, and students seeking to maximize their investment in Bloomberg BNA publications. The resource includes news and information on business and the law, taxes, accounting, human resources, and more.

The trial ends October 31, 2013. Please send comments to Kim Bloedel.

Global Industry Reports Added to IBISWorld Subscription

We now have access to Global Industry Reports in IBISWorld. The Global Industry component of IBISWorld offers analysis and forecasts on 75 global markets. The regions covered include Africa, Europe and the Middle East. To browse the reports click on the link on the IBISWorld homepage.

Changes to Harvard Business Review Access

Changes have been made to our Harvard Business Review access through the EBSCO Business Source Complete database. Harvard Business Publishing has changed the license agreement to make 500 selected Harvard Business Review articles “read-only” in Business Source Complete— the articles cannot be linked to, printed, or downloaded. This change will affect all university customers.

The 500 selected articles are composed of what Harvard considers popular or classic business articles. You and your students will still be able to locate these articles in Business Source Complete but you will be limited to reading them online.

If your students require personal paper or electronic copies of these articles as part of your course readings, you will need to include these articles in your print or electronic course packs. If you find you need a copy of one of these articles for your personal use, Pomerantz Business Library staff will be happy to deliver it to you via our document delivery services.

Please note that Harvard Business Review articles are not to be used in classes. Professors should purchase course materials from Harvard Business Publishing. The following statement is below every HBR article in Business Source Complete:

Improved Home Page Launches Monday, August 5th

Monday, August 5th, the new and improved Business Library home page launches. With a simpler display and more visuals, users should quickly be able to find the resources they need. Coupled with upgrades to Smart Search, the new page will be a great help to students, staff, and the public.
