Database of the Week: SimplyMap

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: Simply MapSM-Iowa_City

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under S in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • An array of data that can be applied to maps (from all of the USA to Census tracts and block groups)
  • More than 75,000 data variables related to demographics, employment, housing, market segments, businesses, consumer spending, brand preferences, and public health.
  • Plot business using: business names, NAICS / SIC codes, sales volume, and number of employees
  • Business information, including address, sales, volume, number of employees, and contact information

SM-_IofITips for searching:

  • Use your UI email address to create an account and save whatever you are working on.
  • Create a new map, tabular report, or ranking by clicking the top buttons
  • Select your variables (must select a variable), locations, and businesses on the left, or use the the map, report, or ranking “Wizard” to guide you through
  • Take note of the tabs on the top right (data filters, display options, and actions)

Database of the Week: PrivCo

Each week we will highlight one of the many PrivCodatabases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: PrivCo

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under P in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Business and financial data on major, non-publicly traded corporations, including family owned, private equity owned, venture backed, and international unlisted companies
  • Company reports: often include business summary, competitors, ownership, financials, and a detialed business description
  • Private market investors
  • Venture capitol funding
  • Private mergers and acquisitions

Tips for searching:

  • Use the search bar at the top to quickly find a known company or investor
  • Use the quick private company screener, in the middle, to search by location, industry, and revenue
  • Use the black tabs across the top to search for: private market investors, venture capitol funding, private M&A deals, private equity deals

Tips for searching:

  • Use the “Quick Search” to search by Company Name, Executive Name, City, State or Phone
  • Use the “Custom Search” to build a more complex search.  Can refine by Business type (Industry Code / Group), Geography (Radius, County, Map Based Search, etc), Business Size, Ownership, and more

Each week we will highlight one of the many databases we have here at the Pomerantz Business Library.

The database: LexisNexis Academic LexisNexis

Where to find it: You can find it here, and under L in the databases A-Z list.

Use it to find:

  • Information on both public and private companies
  • Journal and newspaper articles
  • Company profiles (from Hoovers)
    • lists of executives, company hierarchy, financials, mergers & acquisitions, etc.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings
  • Legal information
  • Company Dossiers – create lists of companies

Tips for searching:

  • Use the search box to search everything in the database (newspapers, company directories, legal news, magazines, journals, etc.)
  • Use the “Get Company Info” box Company_infoon the bottom right, to search company profiles
  • Click the “Company Dossier” link at the bottom of the “Get Company Info” box, and then “Create Company List” Company_List
