We had an upgrade at the Sciences Library!  We have all new computers on the first and third floor. They are faster and the screens are bigger for much easier reading. We were also lucky enough to get two scanners. One is located on the first floor by the printer and the other one is on the  3rd floor in the computer cluster room. We are very excited about these changes! If you need help using the scanners please feel free to ask anyone at the desk and they will be glad to show you.

The University of Iowa Libraries has added a new reference database to its collection: AccessScience. AccessScience is available to students, faculty and staff of the University of Iowa and can be accessed both on and off-campus.

AccessScience (video demo) allows researchers to browse by topic or use keyword searching to find:

• Over 8,500 online articles from the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, 10th edition, written by more than 5000 researchers;
• Research updates from the McGraw-Hill Yearbooks of Science & Technology;
• 110,000+ definitions from the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms;
• 2,000+ biographies of well-known scientists from the Hutchinson Dictionary of Scientific Biography
• Science and technology news and videos from Science News and ScienCentral.

Other features include:

• Multimedia collections of animations, videos and images;
• Q & A section with user-submitted questions and expert answers;
• Topical study guides and ideas for essay topics;
• Bibliographies with literature citations organized by topic.

AccessScience is an excellent place for science & technology researchers to begin their search. It provides an authoritative general overview of science & technology topics and guides researchers to other relevant and reliable sources for further study. The Sciences Library now has a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/UIowaSciencesLibrary) and a Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/UIowaSciLib). These social networking tools will be used to distribute news and other information pertaining the Sciences Library, the University of Iowa Libraries, the University of Iowa and the scientific community in general. “Like”, “Follow” and “Share” the Sciences Library on Facebook and Twitter!

The American Mathematical Society announced the implementation of “Mobile Pairing” for all of its electronic products, such as MathSciNet, eJournals and eBooks. “Mobile Pairing” allows University of Iowa users to pair their mobile devices (tablets, laptops, smartphones, etc.) with the University of Iowa Libraries’ subscriptions and electronic purchases. Once paired, the user will have access to the same AMS publications and products as they do when on-campus, without logging in with their HawkID and password.
