In the Preservation task of preparing journals for commercial binding, the work has always revolved around the “Sample Back.” Sample Backs are index cards that contain all pertinent information needed to bind a serial publication and keep track of its history. Sample Backs tell us the library in which the volume will be housed, the cover color the bindery should use, how often the journal is published, how often we bind it, and any changes in title. For years, Sample Backs were the best and only way to keep accurate records of the binding histories of journals, some of which have been continuously published for a century or more!
Then came the online library catalogs (cue scary music).
The University of Iowa Libraries have been using online catalogs for years, but in the case of serial publications have been reluctant to rely on them completely (one hiccup and you lose decades of materials!?!). Even in this digital age, Sample Backs remained the preferred option for keeping up with a title’s history…until now. In a combined effort with Selina Lin in the Cataloging-Metadata Department, Preservation’s Deb Miller has begun the task of entering all information not currently available in the online catalog into each serial title’s record. This makes all information needed to bind a title visible online. Once the record updating is complete, the sample back gets a purple marker across the front and a one way ticket to the recycle bin (after binding staff compares the catalog record to our commercial bindery’s database to verify that the information is complete). This process will be long, as there are thousands and thousands of titles and only so many hours in a work day.
Transferring information from the Sample Back to the online record? Tedious. Easier access and freedom from those little index cards? Priceless.
Elsevier has acknowledged a problem with opening PDFs in ScienceDirect in some browsers using the Adobe plugin, on some versions of Windows. They are working on this problem.
In the meantime, try one of these workarounds:
1. Save the PDF locally before opening it.
2. Change preferences in Adobe Reader:
- Edit –> Preferences
- Select “Internet,” then uncheck “Display PDF in browser”
- Select “Okay,” then close Reader and reopen your browser.
If you are unable to log in to SmartSearch when using the mobile version of the Safari browser, you may need to reset your cookies permissions. In the browser settings change Accept Cookies from “Never” to “From Visited.”

Classical Music in Video will contain 1,000 hours of classical music performances and masterclasses captured on video—approximately 1,500 performances in all. The collection will contain performances of all forms of classical music, including major orchestral performances by leading orchestras, plus chamber music, oratorio, and solo performances, along with masterclasses and interviews with master teachers from around the world.

Iowa City was a hotbed of women’s liberation in the 1970s, boasting women’s restaurants, coffeehouses, presses, bookstores, childcare centers, publications, and health clinics. The Women’s Liberation Front in Iowa City left many lasting legacies, among them the Women’s Resource and Action Center, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this academic year.
In 1971 Iowa City women opened a women’s center in a Quonset hut leased from the University, creating a space where women could socialize, learn skills, get health information, and receive assistance with legal issues, among other things. A few months later the Women’s Center moved into a house on East Market Street. The Center was renamed the Women’s Resource and Action Center in 1974 and settled into its current home at 130 North Madison in 1976.
On Friday, March 23rd at 4:00 p.m. the Iowa Women’s Archives will host a panel of women who were active in the early years of WRAC. The panelists will recall their involvement with childcare, abortion referral, the Iowa City Women’s Press, women’s softball, and other offshoots of the Women’s Center. We invite others who recall WRAC through the years to join in the conversation. Come for a lively discussion and a piece of birthday cake!

From 1872 until 1949, readers across China relied on the Shanghai news daily Shen Bao, China’s first modern newspaper. Today East Asian scholars rely on this archive for insights on China from the late Qing Dynasy through the Minguo (Republican) era that culminated in Communist revolution.
Scholars can access Shen Bao on two platforms, each with their own unique search functionality:
- Shen Bao (on the Green Apple platform)
- Shen Bao (on the Huawenku platform)
