RefWorks Enhancements

With the New Year comes a new release of Refworks!  In addition to general stability improvements, the new release has several enhancements.  Of these, one of the most exciting is the new Drag-and-Drop functionality for the Quick Access bar which means that users can click on the grey bar above any reference summary and drag the item to the Quick Access bar.

This image shows the ability to click on a citation and drag it into a folder.

In addition, usability revisions include new icons in the Organize & Share Folders area for Twitter, Facebook and over 300 other social bookmarking cites. You can easily share folders with all your Facebook friends or on Twitter with the click of a button.

Also, users will now be able to create New Folders directly from the Add to Folder icon. This makes the process much more seamless since you won’t have to change screens if you need a new folder after importing new references.

Quicker Interlibrary Loan: UBorrow

Receive the exact materials you need more quickly!

Together with 12 other university libraries in the Midwest and the Center for Research Libraries, the University of Iowa Libraries is proud to announce a new service called UBorrow that offers fast access to over 90 million books. Books requested via UBorrow typically are available within a week and are checked out for 12 weeks, with a four-week renewal option.

Iowa faculty, students and staff can search UBorrow directly. A UBorrow search option is also available in Smart Search and InfoLink. UBorrow checks the UI Libraries’ catalog for an available copy before checking other libraries’ catalogs in real time and placing a request directly with the other libraries. If a book is not available through UBorrow, faculty, staff and students can still place a traditional interlibrary loan request and UI Libraries staff will try to obtain it from another library.

Who is loaning the books in UBorrow?

The 13 CIC libraries as well as the Center for Research Libraries will be lending books through UBorrow. The CIC consists of University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. The proximity of these partners, as well as commitments made by each library, allow books to be delivered through UBorrow far more rapidly than when they are requested via traditional interlibrary loan.

RefWorks: Security Certificate Error

When logging in from off-campus via the proxy server, you may receive a security certificate error. This is because the security certificate is being read as “www.refworks.com.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/…” when you log in through the proxy server. Accept the exception/click OK (depending on your web browser) to continue to RefWorks.

If you are using Internet Explorer version 9 (IE9), you will need to Enable Protected Mode under the Security tab before accepting the certificate.
