I grew up knowing about the war as fictionalized by <a title=\"M*A*S*H DVD Season 1 in UI Collection\" href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:library_catalogs:01IOWA_ALMA21387841440002771\">M*A*S*H<\/a>. In history class, we never made it that far into the twentieth century and, unlike today, the conflict between North &amp; South Korea never came up in our current events conversations, making it a forgotten war.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/joh,33\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-977\" style=\"border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/Knauth.jpg\" alt=\"Otto Knauth talking about Korean War headline\" width=\"192\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/Knauth.jpg 443w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/Knauth-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>The University of Iowa Libraries digital collections have a small amount of material relevant for people interested in learning more about this conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a title=\"Otto Knauth oral history interview\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/joh,33\" target=\"_blank\">oral history interview<\/a>, Otto Knauth, a former Des Moines register reporter, recounts putting together the story of the invasion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think it was on June 25, 1950, and the North Koreans invaded South Korea. I got the job of editing that story. It was a Saturday night and it was for the Sunday Register. That was, by far, the biggest story that I had ever handled. I worked on it all night long because we kept getting updates all the way through. So, from edition to edition, it meant changing the story, maybe putting a new lead on it, expanding the text down below, and writing new headlines for it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the October 1950 issue of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Iowa Alumni Review<\/span>, the war was featured as part of the 1950 <a title=\"UI Alumni Publication, October 1950\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/uap\/id\/10632\" target=\"_blank\">summer lecture series<\/a>, with three speakers giving different perspectives on the war.\u00a0 One speaker, Max Lerner, stated \u201cWe must help the revolutionary forces in Asia become a democratic force. We must be on the side of racial equality and social reform everywhere\u2014and at home, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/wallace\/id\/45413\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-979\" style=\"border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/wallace.jpg\" alt=\"Henry Wallace letter to Harry Weinberg\" width=\"278\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/wallace.jpg 441w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/wallace-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a>Our collections also include papers of Henry A. Wallace. His view towards communism changed due to the Korean War, so some of these letters are of particular importance for learning about the effects of the war on attitudes in the United States. A Feb 20 1951 <a title=\"Letter to Harry Weinberg\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/wallace\/id\/45413\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> to Harry Weinberg clarifies his differences of opinion with Truman.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat I partially agree with the Administration on Korea does not mean I back all its foreign policy \u2026 I believe the USA should provisionally offer to the USSR and the World a genuine peace program to stimulate productivity and rapidly improve the standard of living of all backward and undeveloped areas of the world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/gpc,1503\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-978 aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/phase4.jpg\" alt=\"Korean War Phase 4 poster\" width=\"514\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/phase4.jpg 514w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/phase4-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our government poster collection includes a <a title=\"Korean war Phase 4 poster\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/gpc,1503\" target=\"_blank\">chronology<\/a> of phase 4 of the war, detailing events of 25 January-21 April 1951.\u00a0 During this time the US and republic of Korea forces decided to cross the 38th parallel again and General MacArthur was relieved of duty.<\/p>\n<p>You can also learn about the war from the broader social context in the United States, including the Cold war and fears of the \u201cRed Menace\u201d. One of the speakers on the Chautauqua circuit, Edward Hunter, the author of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a title=\"Brain-washing in Red China book in UI collections\" href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:library_catalogs:01IOWA_ALMA21410379800002771\">Brain-washing in Red China<\/a><\/span>,<a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/tc\/id\/45364\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-976\" style=\"border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/brainwashing.jpg\" alt=\"Brain washing and what it means to you brochure\" width=\"344\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/brainwashing.jpg 491w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2010\/06\/brainwashing-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/a> advertised his <a title=\"Hunter brochure\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/tc\/id\/45364\" target=\"_blank\">talk<\/a> about the communist brainwashing, by saying \u201cHere is an expose of the Communists&#8217; best kept secret, a glimpse behind the bamboo curtain at the sinister, ruthlessly effective technique by which the Reds are attempting to conquer the minds of men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the only view presented on the Chautauqua circuit; our collections include a <a title=\"Benner brochure\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/tc\/id\/23490\" target=\"_blank\">brochure<\/a> for\u00a0a movie by Thomas E. Benner showing life and culture of the Korean film, made before and after the communist invasion.<\/p>\n<p>While the UI press book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a title=\"Memoirs of a Cold War Son\" href=\"http:\/\/ir.uiowa.edu\/uipress_sl\/14\/\" target=\"_blank\">Memoirs of a Cold War Son<\/a><\/span> doesn\u2019t directly talk about the Korean War, it gives a first hand account of growing up in this era.<\/p>\n<p>Our collections also include analyses of various aspects of the war. For example, we have a 1997 <a title=\"Han Li interview\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/vwu\/id\/503\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> of Han Ki about the effect of the Korean War on literary production in Korea.\u00a0 You can also listen to Marshall Poe\u2019s <a title=\"Poe interview with Zelizer\" href=\"http:\/\/ir.uiowa.edu\/history_nbih\/89\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> of Julian E. Zelizer about his book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Arsenal of Democracy: The Politics of National Security From WWII to the War on Terrorism<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the armistice between North and South Korea\u00a0is\u00a0fragile and the world still is dealing with hostilities. Our Foreign Relations Council series includes several talks about North Korea, including a <a title=\"Snyder lecture\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/u?\/icfrc,123\" target=\"_blank\">lecture<\/a> by Scott Snyder on Dec 1, 2009 about the 6 party talks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Korean War started 60 years ago today.
