Love, Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Looking at the \u201ctoday in history\u201d webpage from the Associated Press, I saw that today in 1854, the territories of Nebraska and Kansas were established.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There have certainly been jokes made at the expense of our Midwestern neighbors, but instead, a shout out to them on their birthday.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Below is a cartoon by Ding Darling from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/ding\">Editorial Cartoons<\/a> digital collection showing a nice gesture between Sioux City and Lincoln (however Omaha doesn\u2019t seem too pleased about being left out):<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/ding\/id\/10393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"380\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2012\/01\/050509.jpg\" hspace=\"2\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019m not entirely sure what the story was about the \u201cAshland Extension\u201d, but I assume it had to do with extending rail service between the two cities.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Related to this, and on a personal level, I\u2019m excited by the talk of possibly seeing passenger rail service return to Iowa City, with 2 daily trains running to Chicago.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Check out an article by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/index_weber.php?CISOROOT=\/weber\">Irving Weber<\/a> describing the last time this was available:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/weber\/id\/3639\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2012\/01\/train.jpg\" hspace=\"2\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>&#8211;Mark F.
