In my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/2019\/07\/10\/filmmaking-in-the-void\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">previous post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, I described the film I pitched\u2026 and how my life exploded this summer. (The too-long-didn\u2019t-read: there was an accident, a week in STICU, and an aborted film shoot.)&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i.kinja-img.com\/gawker-media\/image\/upload\/syjnlnnl7jgion9pjcsx.gif\" width=\"963\" height=\"542\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GIF: <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory just digitized and archived 497 (mesmerizing, terrifying) films of early nuclear tests, which can be found on LLNL\u2019s <\/span><\/i><a style=\"color: #999999\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XnrLY-phipw&amp;list=PLvGO_dWo8VfcmG166wKRy5z-GlJ_OQND5&amp;index=2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">youtube channel<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ve spent the last few weeks figuring out what all of this means for my family, myself, and my film. It\u2019s been a crash course in: how to be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more supportive sister and potential caretaker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; how to approach the creative process when I don\u2019t have everything I need; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and how to make work that grapples with darkness when I too am in the dark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of this said: I don\u2019t understand the big picture yet, so I\u2019ll focus on details instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thinking about America\u2019s current relationship with petroleum led me to ask a question I ask a lot these days: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How did we get here?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This ultimately led me to the 1970s oil crisis. (TL;DR: Postwar America consumed more oil than it could produce, so it began importing oil from the Middle East; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/about_us\/24.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> declared an oil embargo in 1973; the price of oil sky-rocketed, leading to fuel shortages; America <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">freaked out!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2013\/10\/16\/ap731223029_wide-05e5992d09b5a8b4bd431d63b01ab9b481300065-s800-c85.jpg\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2013\/10\/16\/ap7306010161_wide-46e2e8ad0c34c0bdfdaa425c7561c0eb564c1f6c.jpg?s=1400\" width=\"474\" height=\"266\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Photos, L to R: Long lines at a New York City gas station; No fuel for sale at a Pennsylvania gas station. Credit: NPR, <\/span><\/i><a style=\"color: #999999\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/parallels\/2013\/10\/15\/234771573\/the-1973-arab-oil-embargo-the-old-rules-no-longer-apply\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe 1973 Arab Oil Embargo: The Old Rules No Longer Apply.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Years after the initial embargo, on July 15, 1979, Jimmy Carter beamed into TV sets across America to deliver his landmark <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCrisis of Confidence\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> speech. (Carter gets a bad rap but as a former ATLien, I\u2019m partial.) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To paraphrase, Carter says we\u2019re the reason we\u2019re in this mess, and&#8230; he isn&#8217;t wrong. In my opinion, this speech draws a clear parallel between then and now, but this stands out in particular:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;\u2026 Too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we\u2019ve discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning. Among strict import quotas, incentives for developing alternate fuels, and the suggestion that &#8220;we must face the truth,&#8221; there&#8217;s this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>&#8220;We will protect our environment. But when this nation critically needs a refinery or a pipeline, we will build it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cut to: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/oil-and-natural-gas\/wells-to-consumer\/transporting-oil-natural-gas\/pipeline\/where-are-the-pipelines\">vast network of pipelines<\/a> being built across America.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before this gets too long, I&#8217;d like to thank Matt Butler, Stephanie Blalock, Leah Morlan, Tom Keegan, my fellow fellows, and the Digital Scholarship &amp; Publishing Studio et al.
