{"id":50,"date":"2008-02-19T09:05:40","date_gmt":"2008-02-19T15:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/dls\/2008\/02\/19\/world-renowned-sculptor-and-printmaker\/"},"modified":"2013-12-10T15:01:12","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T21:01:12","slug":"world-renowned-sculptor-and-printmaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/2008\/02\/19\/world-renowned-sculptor-and-printmaker\/","title":{"rendered":"World-renowned sculptor and printmaker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The granddaughter of slaves and daughter of a college professor, (Alice) Elizabeth Catlett grew up in a household that <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/aawiowa\/id\/1910\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2012\/01\/catlett1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"377\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>placed great value on education. She received a B.A. in art from Howard University in 1936, and then taught high school for two years before coming to The University of Iowa for graduate school to study under Grant Wood.<\/p>\n<p>Since the residence halls were several years away from <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/aawiowa\/id\/725\" target=\"_blank\">integration<\/a>, Catlett rented rooms with local African American families during her stay in Iowa City, and also spent a year in the <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/aawiowa\/id\/0\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Federation Home<\/a>. In a 2003 <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/aawiowa\/id\/1910\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> for the UI&#8217;s alumni magazine, she remembered her surprise at the mixture of openness and discrimination present at Iowa &#8212; a contrast to the more straightforward segration of her Washington D.C. upbringing: &#8220;I&#8217;d lived in an African American culture my whole life. In Iowa City, I suddenly was living among white people, but I still couldn&#8217;t do things like live in the dorms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Catlett expressed no such ambivalence when recalling her classes with <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/results.php?CISOOP1=exact&amp;CISOFIELD1=CISOSEARCHALL&amp;CISOROOT=\/dp,\/gradart,\/uima&amp;CISOBOX1=Wood%2C+Grant\" target=\"_blank\">Grant Wood<\/a>: &#8220;[He] was a very generous teacher and he influenced all my work. He would tell his students, &#8216;Paint what you know.'&#8221; This advice helped her to develop her signature\u00a0social realism style, featuring images drawn from African American culture and experience.\u00a0Upon graduating with The University&#8217;s first M.F.A. in sculpture, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2012\/01\/catlett2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" align=\"left\" \/>Catlett&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/afp\/id\/717\" target=\"_blank\">thesis work<\/a>\u00a0included the stone carving <em>Mother and Child, <\/em>which won top prize in Chicago&#8217;s 1940 American Negro Exposition &#8212; only the first of many\u00a0awards in Catlett&#8217;s long and distinguished career.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2007, The University of Iowa Museum of Art opened the exhibit &#8220;I Am: Prints by Elizabeth Catlett,&#8221; featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/results.php?CISORESTMP=results.php&amp;CISOVIEWTMP=item_viewer.php&amp;CISOMODE=grid&amp;CISOGRID=thumbnail%2CA%2C1%3Bcreato%2CA%2C0%3Btitle%2CA%2C1%3Bdatd%2C200%2C0%3Bmateri%2CA%2C0%3B20%3Bcreato%2Ctitle%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone&amp;CISOBIB=title%2CA%2C1%2CN%3Bother%2CA%2C0%2CN%3Brelati%2C200%2C0%2CN%3Bnone%2CA%2C0%2CN%3Bnone%2CA%2C0%2CN%3B20%3Btitle%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone&amp;CISOTHUMB=20+%284x5%29%3Btitle%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone&amp;CISOTITLE=20%3Btitle%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone&amp;CISOHIERA=20%3Bother%2Ctitle%2Cnone%2Cnone%2Cnone&amp;CISOSUPPRESS=0&amp;CISOOP1=all&amp;CISOFIELD1=creato&amp;CISOROOT=%2Fuima&amp;CISOBOX1=Catlett%2C+Elizabeth\" target=\"_blank\">27 newly acquired prints<\/a>.
