{"id":4483,"date":"2015-11-03T09:45:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T15:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/drp\/?p=4483"},"modified":"2016-12-02T13:11:44","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T19:11:44","slug":"diy-natural-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/2015\/11\/03\/diy-natural-history\/","title":{"rendered":"DIY Natural History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Together with the <a href=\"http:\/\/mnh.uiowa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Iowa Museum of Natural History<\/a>, the UI Libraries launched a new <a href=\"https:\/\/diyhistory.lib.uiowa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">DIY History<\/a> collection, the <a href=\"https:\/\/diyhistory.lib.uiowa.edu\/collections\/show\/17\" target=\"_blank\">Egg Cards,<\/a> a little over a month ago.\u00a0 These field note cards were collected by amateur ornithologists during the late 1800s\/early 1900s in Iowa and elsewhere, for the purposes of identifying egg specimens in nests.\u00a0 Being handwritten, these cards haven&#8217;t been searchable, but with the power of crowdsourced transcription, will become a searchable database to accompany the museum&#8217;s collection of bird eggs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4484\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4484\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2015\/11\/eggcard-transcript-form.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4484\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2015\/11\/eggcard-transcript-form-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"EggCards transcription form\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2015\/11\/eggcard-transcript-form-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2015\/11\/eggcard-transcript-form-1024x771.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/studio\/files\/2015\/11\/eggcard-transcript-form.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EggCards transcription form<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This represents the first &#8220;natural science&#8221; project in the DIY History program, following the success of citizen science initiatives such as Zooniverse&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galaxyzoo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Galaxy Zoo<\/a> and the Smithsonian&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/transcription.si.edu\/project\/6780\" target=\"_blank\">Bumblebee Project<\/a>.\u00a0 Participation in the Egg Cards bounced with the release of an IowaNow <a href=\"http:\/\/now.uiowa.edu\/2015\/10\/libraries-diy-crowdsourcing-brings-museum-collection-life\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>, and the 1900 cards are nearing halfway completion.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/diyhistory.lib.uiowa.edu\/collections\/show\/17\" target=\"_blank\">Join the fun<\/a> &#8211;
