Worst of these was the summer of 1936, the hottest on record, marking the end of the Dust Bowl years. A <a href=\"http:\/\/dailyiowan.lib.uiowa.edu\/DI\/1936\/di1936-07-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">July 16th <em>Daily Iowan<\/em> story<\/a>\u00a0 put heat-related fatalities in those pre-air-conditioning days at 3,500; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/arx\/events\/heatwave36.php\" target=\"_blank\">according to government figures<\/a>, the death toll rose to 5,000 by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the heat, some Iowa Citians still found the strength to indulge their intellectual curiosity, as shown in this <em>D.I.<\/em> investigation of whether it really is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.
