While print collections are still the mainstay of the UI Libraries, information is increasingly moving online, resulting in the near ubiquity of the word \u201cdigital\u201d \u2013 a term that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcoyle.net\/jal-32-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">as researcher Karen Coyle recently observed in <em>The Journal of Academic Librarianship<\/em><\/a>, has succeeded a previous generation\u2019s touchstone of modernity: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">&#8220;I want to say one word to you. Just one word.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes, sir.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Are you listening?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes, I am.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Plastics.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Graduate\" target=\"_blank\">The Graduate<\/a>, 1967<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Unlike Dustin Hoffman\u2019s character, current graduates require no such one-word career advice; they know the future is digital. Today\u2019s students, sometimes referred to as \u201cdigital natives,\u201d are well aware of the immediacy and convenience of seeking electronic information on the Web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Here in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/drp\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Library Services<\/a>, the Libraries\u2019 newest department, we\u2019re working towards enhancing electronic information with two additional characteristics: permanence and accessibility. By transferring expertise developed over decades of modern library practice to maintain print scholarship, DLS seeks to support the University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070309084251\/http:\/\/www.uiowa.edu:80\/%7Eiretf\/\" target=\"_blank\">commitment to electronic scholarship<\/a> by creating digital collections that are searchable, trustworthy and long-term. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">To this end, we&#8217;re providing scholars on campus and around the world with access to the University\u2019s rich collections of research materials, such as the internationally known <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/dada\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dada archive<\/a>, the locally renowned <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/index_weber.php?CISOROOT=\/weber\" target=\"_blank\">Irving Weber materials<\/a>, and the previously undocumented <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm4\/index_latinas.php?CISOROOT=\/latinas\" target=\"_blank\">Mujeres Latinas collection<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Stay tuned for more information, and please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Digital Library<\/a> frequently to watch us grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><em>&#8211;Jen Wolfe<br \/>\nMetadata Librarian<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As in all other areas of scholarship, the internet has had a transformative effect on libraries and librarianship.
