Late yesterday, the University of Iowa Museum of Art announced the passing of Byron Burford, Professor of Art at the University of Iowa for nearly 40 years. He died on Friday, June 17,\u00a0at the age of 90.<\/p>\n

According to the UIMA, Buford was originally from Mississippi and\u00a0came to Iowa City to study with Grant Wood.\u00a0“After graduating with\u00a0an MFA in 1947, he\u00a0became a fixture of local life, known for his jazz performances and as\u00a0the director of\u00a0the Great Byron Burford Circus of Artistic Wonders, a collection of motorized canvases that toured the Midwest.”<\/p>\n

Buford’s work\u00a0acquired by the UIMA can\u00a0be found in the University of Iowa Museum of Art Digital Collection <\/a>hosted by the Iowa Digital Library.<\/p>\n

“Burford’s art is well-represented in major museum collections across the country.\u00a0The UIMA first collected his work in 1968, with\u00a0an oil painting from 1948 entitled Harmonica Player or Summer Event<\/a>.<\/em> Since then, the museum has acquired 16 additional works <\/a>by Burford, many of which have proven to be very popular with visitors and staff alike.”<\/p>\n
