Her father, a medical resident,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">moved to the US in the early 1970s with his family to settle&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_CommentStart x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">down<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Ong&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">studied studio art as an&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">undergraduate<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;at New York University and earned her MFA in&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">digital<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;media from the Rhode Island School of Design.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">She&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">currently works as the user-experience designer at the Yale Digital Humanities Lab at the Yale University Library in Con<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">necticut. Ong was also a literary fellow with the organization&nbsp;<a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kundiman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"10\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\">Kundiman<\/span><\/a>: which&nbsp;seeks&nbsp;to create a mentorship and community space for Asian Americans exploring their creative craft, artistic freedom, and the challenges within the Asian-American diaspora.&nbsp;When it comes to her&nbsp;<a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/dogwoodliterary.com\/2021\/04\/15\/2021-cover-artist-monica-ong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\">influences<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;some of them&nbsp;include Theresa&nbsp;Hak Kyung Cha, Claudia&nbsp;Rankine&nbsp;and Barbara Kruger,&nbsp;<a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mongmedia\/status\/1434462835908751362?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\">Daisaku Ikeda<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;her family, and learning and connecting more with her own cultural history and heritage.&nbsp;Monica Ong&nbsp;is also a&nbsp;Bodhisattva,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Buddhism&nbsp;has influenced her work and her personhood,&nbsp;which you can learn more about from her interview on the podcast&nbsp;<a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/buddhability.org\/podcast\/monicaong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"13\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\">Buddhability<\/span><\/a>, &#8220;Episode #30: How to overcome resistance in creative work.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Her first book,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Silent Anomalies<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, is a combination of her visual art and poetry <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">that&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">touches on many subjects of her life and family history. The poems speak on <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Chinese and Filipino&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">history, politics, and identity from her perspective and understanding. As a result,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">her grandfather dressed her mother<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;a<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">s a boy for family portraits for several years<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, and Ong saw how&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">that made her think about the cultural narratives of women\u2019s bodies, the shame and negative values placed upon them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">She then spoke about her&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">maternal&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">aunt<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;who<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;struggled with&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">m<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">ental illness<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, and how her dad, trained in Western medicine<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">attempte<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">d<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;to help her but was at odds with&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Ong\u2019s grand<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">mother<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;who was superstitious and&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">said&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">h<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">er daughter&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">was <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">possesse<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">d<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> as a way of saving face<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in a world that did not understand, and still struggles with, mental illness. A<\/span>s such, Ong\u2019s aunt remained undiagnosed and untreated for most of her life<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Ong\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">mother and aunt\u2019s experiences were<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;two crucial&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">moments&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">in her&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">development of what she&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">wanted to <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">accomplis<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">h<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;in&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Silent Anomalies<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">. She w<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">anted to think of art as a sa<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">f<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">e space to create and entertain dialogue about health issues, par<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">ticularly where health and culture intersect<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Ong&#8217;s latest&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">work<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, the exhibition <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SpellingErrorV2 x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Planetaria, <\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">is full of visual poetry inspired by astronomy, where text is integral to her artistic creation. <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">The works in her exhibition has many different forms<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">:&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">shadow boxes, slideshow reels, and book carts&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">are<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;a few.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Her&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">pieces combine <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">different representations of cosmological forms and celestial bodies<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">examples<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> being&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">tarot cards and Chinese astronomy<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Ong&#8217;s interest stemmed from wanting to know more about astronomy<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;and Chinese cosmology.<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> In an article for the <em>New Haven Independent<\/em>, she <\/span><\/span><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newhavenindependent.org\/index.php\/archives\/entry\/planetaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">mentions<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;how she was only semi-familiar with the Chinese system of constellations as a child. \u201cEvery fall we would have a moon festival and my family would get together, play games, and have a feast, and then there would be the story about a woman who drank a potion for everlasting life, and she went to the moon, but her lover stayed on Earth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2021\/12\/tumblr_0a5f1985b9c21ba5f625a539df3ff401_51bdaf92_2048-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">When she became an adult and a parent, she wanted to pass her cultural heritage down to her son, so she began learning more about Chinese cosmology. She learned that some of the constellations in Greek cosmology appear in Chinese cosmology, as do some of the same star forms, but they are interpreted differently. <\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">For example,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">the stars that make Orion&#8217;s belt are three Gods of fortune in China. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot less emphasis on mythical gods,\u201d Ong said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot more a reflection of the hierarchy of society.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">So<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;there are asterisms for accountants and archivists, as well as the king\u2019s chariot drivers, and empty wells and fields. It\u2019s a geography of the way the&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Emperor<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> saw life (<em>New Haven Independent<\/em>).\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">As Ong learned more about Chinese cosmology, she saw how it, like the Greek system, is &#8220;centered around male power.&#8221; She&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">sought<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;to change that in her work by using&nbsp;a<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">&nbsp;feminist and personal narrative<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">. She does this by using womanhood,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newhavenarts.org\/arts-paper\/articles\/intersectional-stargazing-monica-ongs-planetaria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"6\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_Underlined x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">the body<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">, female&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">scientists,<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> and female cosmonauts. Her exhibition pieces also include her family&#8217;s ancestral history and immigration stories.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span>Ong states that&nbsp;\u201cWhat\u2019s empowering about being an artist is that you can say, \u2018how can we flip the script and write from a different point of view that centers the reader? How can we rethink our stories in a way that\u2019s more inclusive for everyone?\u2019 The palace is not up there; it\u2019s actually your own life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This flipped script can especially be seen<span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\"> in the pieces here at Special Collections &amp; Archives. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The Star Gazer: Planisphere Poetry<\/em> depicts the Chinese night sky from the northern hemisphere. It is based on the Soochow Astronomical Chart of 1193. This star chart holds small phrases of beautiful prose weaved around constellational lines to form the poetry within this piece. Taken directly from her <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/www.proximavera.com\/gallery\/p\/star-gazer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proxima Vera site,<\/a> there are a few steps to read this structured poem:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTo view the stars, turn the disc to align the desired date with the hour of night. Face south and hold the planisphere overhead with the corner marked North facing north. The map will reveal a celestial poem that awaits you among the asterisms. Based on a device from the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volvelle\">medieval era<\/a>,<\/span> Ong&#8217;s volvelle includes fragments of poetry along with an image of her paternal grandmother, whose image waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon. Ong explains her design on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proximavera.com\/gallery\/p\/lunar-volvelle\">Proxima Vera stating, <\/a>&#8220;During the full moon, my father&#8217;s mother will watch over you.&#8221;*<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Overall, Ong\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">work has been an exploration, a dive into&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">family and research, connections and experiences, and solving the mysteries of what she wishes to learn more about<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"x_TextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">Monica Ong i<\/span><span class=\"x_NormalTextRun x_SCXW126038370 x_BCX0\">s a visual poet, an artist, a mother, a sister, a daughter.
