The men enrolled served 6-month&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">terms, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;could serve up to two years. They were required to send a large chunk of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;the $30 a month they made&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;to their families<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">During the Great Depression, these men were fed, clothed, and housed. They made the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">equivalent of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$500 a month in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saving.org\/inflation\/inflation.php?amount=5&amp;year=1930\"> today\u2019s dollars<\/a><\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">and worked physically demanding jobs.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;The money made a huge difference to these men and their families (they were usually unmarried).&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">At the beginning of the CCC program, the program was about creating model manual laborers; by the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> end of 1942, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0095327x09333944\">men enrolled were seen as future soldiers<\/a> and many enlisted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;in WWII<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;after<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;finishing their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;time in the Corps.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The men in the CCC \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">made valuable contributions to forest management, flood control, conservation projects, and the development of state and national parks, forests, and historic sites. In return, the men received the benefits of education and training, a small paycheck, and the dignity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thro\/learn\/historyculture\/civilian-conservation-corps.htm\">honest work.<\/a>\u201d<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;One such man was Harry L. Hogancamp, whose scrapbook is held in <a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/primo-explore\/fulldisplay?docid=01IOWA_ALMA21477625670002771&amp;context=L&amp;vid=01IOWASC&amp;lang=en_US&amp;search_scope=sc_scope&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=default_tab&amp;query=any,contains,Civilian%20Conservation%20Corps&amp;sortby=rank\">Special Collections &amp; Archives.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A member of CCC Company 3728 in Bancroft, Iowa, Hogancamp was a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n Iowa native&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with a camera who documented his bunkmates, peers and officers, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">daily work.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His certificate of proficiency in \u201cStump Blasting\u201d is found at the beginning of his scrapbook, along with a cigarette purchase card, both from 1940. Nolte Collection of WWI and CCC Materials<\/a> (MsC0996)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The program has a strong history in Iowa.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, the realities of the CCC program were far from perfect. It was segregated,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and Black men were not allowed into supervisory positions except as educational directors in the all-Black camps; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/10.2307\/2717266\">the majority of all CCC camps were led by white men<\/a>.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;There was also a separate division for federally recognized tribes:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indian Emergency Conservation Work Division\u201d (IECW), also known as CCC-ID (\u201cIndian Division\u201d)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gower]. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">President Joe Biden&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">has reinstated the CCC, but with a different aim, and certainly one that is inclusive. His Civilian Climate Corps&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">borrows the letters of FDR\u2019s CCC and spins it on its head: it is an initiative<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to put a new generation of Americans to work conserving and restoring public lands and waters, increasing reforestation, increasing carbon sequestration in the agricultural sector, protecting biodiversity,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/01\/27\/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-executive-actions-to-tackle-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad-create-jobs-and-restore-scientific-integrity-across-federal-government\/#:~:text=The%20order%20also%20calls%20for,biodiversity%2C%20improving%20access%20to%20recreation%2C\"> improving access to recreation, and addressing the changing climate<\/a>.\u201d<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The establishment of this new Corps was part of a brief from January 27, and shows that the new president, like FDR,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;wants Americans to have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;opportunities on improving the environment. Although the setup of Biden\u2019s CCC&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is likely to be different, it is&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impossible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;to deny the parallels between the New Deal and the current administration.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like its predecessor, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2021-02-18\/biden-climate-conservation-corps-global-warming-jobs\">new CCC uses government programs for job<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s and training for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">public projects aimed at preparing for, mitigating or forestalling some of the worst environmental impacts of global warming.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is project is, so far, not up and running. But it is worth it to look back on the example set by the 1930s CCC and see what to emulate and what to change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
