Along with original artwork, there is an impressive collection of reference material, monographs, and other rare books. Among Dr. Sackner\u2019s favorites is a little-known work written by the 19th-century American painter George Catlin with the alarming title, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catlin\u2019s book, first published in 1870, was one of the inspirations for the Sackner\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1992 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/2020\/04\/22\/in-the-shadow-of-covid-19-the-sackner-collection-shines-a-light-on-the-beauty-in-breathing\/\">\u201cBeauty in Breathing\u201d exhibit<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sackner recalls: \u201cCatlin did all of the illustrations, and there is some very interesting typography in the book\u2026 on the last page, \u201cShut Your Mouth\u201d is printed in very large type. When I was giving tours of the collection, sometimes I would show this book at the end of the tour, and say, \u201cNow I\u2019m going to shut MY mouth!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/05\/catlin4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/05\/catlin4-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/05\/catlin4-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/05\/catlin4-480x300.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/speccoll\/files\/2020\/05\/catlin4.jpg 524w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Catlin&#8217;s take on the two kinds of breathing<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catlin, who is most famous for his many paintings of the indigenous people of the North American plains, penned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shut Your Mouth <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in response to what he observed as the superior health of the tribes among which he traveled. He came to the conclusion that the key to their vigor was their practice of breathing through the nose, and \u201c&#8230;that breathing should be done as Nature designed it, through the nostrils, instead of through the mouth.\u201d Although the book was criticized in medical journals at the time for its lack of scientific rigor and the popular press derided the author as \u201cIndian-loving Catlin,\u201d the little book sparked interest among health-conscious readers, and the volume was widely reprinted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some common terminology of the era that we may find cringe-worthy today, the book reflects Catlin\u2019s deep passion for improving the health of people of all backgrounds, his profound respect for Native Americans, and in some cases, his sense of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humor. The illustrations are sometimes comical and often satiric. As many of us are now spending our days working from home, the tendency may be to also be less physically active. Dr. Sackner, a retired pulmonologist, reminds us that during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is vitally important to protect our lungs.
