The&nbsp;Ariane&nbsp;rocket will launch on December&nbsp;22&nbsp;from French Guiana&nbsp;and carry the James Webb Space Telescope to&nbsp;the stars.&nbsp;At the time of this writing, the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/webbLaunch\/countdown.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">James Webb Space Telescope countdown clock<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shows that launch will happen in 18 days, 15 hours, 36 minutes, and 26 seconds. After the telescope travels around one million miles away from Earth, it will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/webbLaunch\/assets\/documents\/WebbFactSheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">unfold, cool down, calibrate, and&nbsp;deploy&nbsp;a sunshield the size of a&nbsp;tennis court<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A more powerful telescope than the famous Hubble telescope, the Webb space telescope has been called the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cNext Generation Space Telescope.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;In addition to the magnificent sunshield, the Webb space telescope has&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/about\/innovations\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">infrared detectors,&nbsp;microshutters, and a&nbsp;cryrocooler<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;The infrared detectors will allow scientists to measure faint light sources of stars and planets, while the&nbsp;microshutters&nbsp;allow&nbsp;scientists to captures the images of multiple objects in the sky at once.&nbsp;The&nbsp;cyrocooler&nbsp;will keep&nbsp;one of the instruments on the telescope&nbsp;at a temperature lower than \u2013448\u00b0F so that the instrument can capture&nbsp;light at&nbsp;mid-infrared wavelength.&nbsp;Perhaps the most beautiful part of the Webb space telescope&nbsp;is&nbsp;the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jwst.nasa.gov\/content\/observatory\/ote\/mirrors\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">gold hexagonal mirrors<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;that&nbsp;will&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;the&nbsp;collection of&nbsp;faint&nbsp;light&nbsp;from stars, planets, and galaxies&nbsp;so that scientists can learn more about these distant objects.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To read more about space telescopes, check out these books from the UI Libraries.
