Memorial Day began in the 1800s when&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/today-in-history\/may-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">women began putting flowers on the gravestones of soldiers<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">, leading the&nbsp;day&nbsp;to be known at the time as&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/news\/topics\/memorialday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Decoration Day<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">. In addition to the decoration of graves that led to Memorial Day, women have had&nbsp;an important presence during wartime. Even as far back as the Revolutionary War, women were&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/women\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">nurses, cooks, seamstresses, fighting while disguised as men, and acting as spies<\/span><\/a>. As time went on, women became involved with scientific developments that have impacted wartime efforts.&nbsp;Their&nbsp;intellects contributed to&nbsp;nuclear fission,&nbsp;cryptography,&nbsp;compilers for&nbsp;programming,&nbsp;wireless communication security,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kevlar&nbsp;vests.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"spellingerror\"><b>Lise<\/b><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>&nbsp;Meitner (1878-1968)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomicheritage.org\/profile\/lise-meitner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">First to explain nuclear fission, with her nephew Otto Frisch<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"eop\">&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:default_scope:TN_dawson9780817645632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/science\/files\/2018\/05\/LiseMeitnerDawnoftheNuclearAge.jpg\" alt=\"Image of book cover for Lisa Meitner and the Dawn of the Nuclear Age\" width=\"69\" height=\"100\"><\/a>&nbsp;
