Image credit: Keene Swett, Geoscience Dept., UI.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The recent eruptions of the Kilauea volcano have reminded us of the humbling power of nature, have drawn our attention to the hazards associated with active volcanoes such as ash plumes, earthquakes, and&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">vog<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">&nbsp;(volcanic smog), and have disrupted the lives of thousands of Hawaiians. Baker, Geoscience Dept., UI.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Kilauea is a highly active volcano\u2014<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/kilauea-erupting-since-1983-can-scientists-predict-will-stop\" target=\"_blank\">lava has been flowing almost continuously since 1983<\/a>.\u00a0Kilauea means \u201cspewing,\u201d and it is a type of shield volcano. Researchers study the\u00a0changes in Kilauea\u2019s\u00a0magma composition\u00a0and temperature\u00a0over time.\u00a0Scientists also\u00a0track\u00a0the\u00a0amount of <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/hvo_earthquakes.html\" target=\"_blank\">seismic activity<\/a>\u00a0and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/hvo_monitoring_gas.html\" target=\"_blank\">sulfur dioxide emissions\u00a0<\/a>of Kilauea.\u00a0Tracking Kilauea&#8217;s behavior allows scientists to predict when Kilauea will erupt,\u00a0giving people\u00a0living near the volcano time to evacuate\u00a0and\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0how science saves lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/geoscience\/id\/1360\/rec\/4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"158\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/science\/files\/2018\/05\/Lava_fountain_at_Puu_Oo_in_1984.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Lava fountain at Pu'u O'o in 1984\" class=\"wp-image-1528\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lava fountain at Pu&#8217;u O&#8217;o in 1984.
