  1. What are the issues with respect to emulation as a digital preservation strategy? The third set of files represents the bit streams of the operating system and any other. meeting the demands of stewardship in the digital age begins with casting its net wide. An important part of the preservation and typically involves the third party.

    1. The UIowa Preservation and Conservation Department does not currently use emulation. Our digital preservation services can be found on this page: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/preservation/digital-preservation/

I suggest you do a review of the literature. From there you can narrow what kind of issues you’re interested in learning more about and get more precise answers. With respect to PASIG, I’ve linked to the group’s page.

I cannot answer your question as intelligently as someone with direct experience with emulation. On the surface, emulation resolves obsolescence of the original carrier, software, and hardware, but I can’t speak to rights management, cost, or maintenance.

Leslie Johnston of the Library of Congress wrote a 2014 post, Considering Emulation for Digital Preservation, on the topic. That might be a good starting point for your research. https://blogs.loc.gov/thesignal/2014/02/considering-emulation-for-digital-preservation Happy hunting!
