{"id":7828,"date":"2026-10-07T17:43:45","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T22:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/?p=7828"},"modified":"2026-10-07T20:22:17","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T01:22:17","slug":"celebrating-iowa-conductor-james-dixon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2026\/10\/07\/celebrating-iowa-conductor-james-dixon\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Iowa conductor James Dixon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: &apos;Calibri&apos;,sans-serif\">When the University of Iowa Libraries first received James Dixon\u2019s papers in 2021, Katie Buehner knew there was a story waiting to be told about his adventurous international conducting career and lasting impact on orchestras and musicians at home in Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As director of the Rita Benton Music Library, Buehner worked with Carey Bostian and Miera Kim, close friends of Dixon who generously donated more than 1,200 music scores along with photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other materials. James Dixon Papers, University Archives, University of Iowa Libraries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I think listening to the stories from people who played under Dixon\u2019s baton really drew me into wanting to know more about him and his philosophy of music-making,\u201d says Buehner. \u201cThere\u2019s great admiration for him as a skilled conductor and musician, even if he could be gruff and demanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection inspired Buehner to propose an exhibition honoring Dixon\u2019s distinguished career, with a focus on his efforts to build community around music. She sought the perspective of music history scholar Sarah Suhadolnik, an assistant professor of instruction in the UI School of Music, to round out the exhibit\u2019s storytelling and contextualize his efforts in the greater culture of 20th-century American orchestras and society. Photo: Krista Hershberger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"margin: 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: &apos;Calibri&apos;,sans-serif\">\u201cI always listen with great interest to Katie\u2019s tales\u00a0of how the library collects the\u00a0rare\u00a0items it accumulates. Discussions of\u00a0the work involved in\u00a0acquiring\u00a0the Dixon\u00a0materials pushed me to\u00a0develop\u00a0my\u00a0\u2018Histories of U.S. Orchestras\u2019 graduate seminar,\u201d says Suhadolnik. \u201cWhen it came time to put the exhibit together, Katie thought my work\u00a0on the course\u00a0would prove useful in developing the\u00a0narrative for the exhibit.\u00a0It did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSarah created the community frame for the narrative,\u201d Buehner says, \u201cand it beautifully anchors Dixon\u2019s story and the story of his many orchestras.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suhadolnik and Buehner took care to provide a \u201cbehind the podium\u201d look at how orchestras of all sizes connect with their communities and become crucial to sustaining them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: &apos;Calibri&apos;,sans-serif\">\u201cThis is a story about Iowa and Iowans,\u201d says Buehner. \u201cWhile many of the characters in the exhibit travel a great deal to other locations, their roots stay firmly in this community. This is also a story about music and how it brings people together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in\"><span style=\"font-family: &apos;Calibri&apos;,sans-serif\">The co-curators also say the exhibit has special meaning for each of them through their own lens: Suhadolnik as a scholar and musician whose research focuses on the history of American orchestras, and Buehner as a librarian and musician who helped bring Dixon\u2019s extensive collection to the Libraries. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: &apos;Calibri&apos;,sans-serif\">\u201cDixon operated at all times with a tangible vision of what his ensembles contributed to their respective communities,\u201d says Suhadolnik. \u201cI hope visitors left the exhibit with a better appreciation for the arts of all sorts as fundamentally collaborative undertakings.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt its most personal to me, the exhibit is an ode to what I fear can get lost in conservatory-style music education. Long hours alone in a practice room can make it hard to feel enmeshed in a larger musical ecosystem,\u201d says Suhadolnik. \u201cThe rigors of this type of musical training can undermine a performer\u2019s relationship with prospective listeners, and\/or make attending a live performance as part of an audience into a chore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen many exhibits about music, especially centered on classical music stories, and that\u2019s a world I\u2019ve inhabited for decades now,\u201d says Buehner. \u201cIt\u2019s very easy to say that classical music or orchestras are passe and not accessible to the average person, but I think this exhibit tells a different story.
