{"id":6794,"date":"2024-09-18T11:48:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T16:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/?p=6794"},"modified":"2024-10-02T14:30:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T19:30:33","slug":"roth-reflects-on-serving-as-chair-of-the-ui-libraries-advancement-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/18\/roth-reflects-on-serving-as-chair-of-the-ui-libraries-advancement-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Jane Roth reflects on term as Libraries Advancement Council chair, commitment to university"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For Jane Roth, the connection to the University of Iowa started with her mother and father\u2014and it\u2019s continued to grow thanks to her commitment to helping students be as successful as possible during their time on campus and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roth recently completed her one-year term as chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/giving\/lac\/\">Libraries Advancement Council (LAC)<\/a>, which actively champions the Libraries and provides guidance and feedback to help the UI Center for Advancement\u2019s (UICA) effort to increase support through fundraising, advocacy, and engagement. She\u2019s been a member of the group since it started near the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"jane roth\" class=\"wp-image-6797\" style=\"width:355px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/jane-collage-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roth\u2019s connection to Iowa began with her parents, and her generosity includes donating original Herky drawings to Special Collections and Archives with her mother in her father\u2019s memory.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of serving on the Council from its inception and also having the chance to serve as chair,\u201d says Roth, from Leesburg, Virginia. \u201cFrom preservation to providing the latest in online resources, fostering excellence and student success is at the forefront of everything the Libraries does. It makes a real impact because it touches all areas of campus, and I believe I\u2019ve made a difference too, which is important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roth\u2019s mother, Bernice \u201cBunny\u201d Havlicek, earned a GN degree from the College of Nursing in 1940 and her father, Frank, earned a BS in physical education in 1948. Frank also served as the as the business manager of Athletics and held a contest for a new university mascot in 1948. In fact, it was drawings of the winner\u2014the beloved Herky the Hawk\u2014that first connected Roth to the Libraries. She and her mother donated the <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/islandora\/object\/ui%3Aictcs_29836\">Dick Spencer III Collection of Herky Pen and Ink Drawings<\/a> to the University Archives in Frank\u2019s memory in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A gift from Roth to the Libraries also provides funding to employ graduate students who are dedicated to special projects. Some of their work includes curating an exhibit showcasing the evolution of Herky and collecting student life archival materials. King university librarian; and Paula Wiley, UICA associate director of development, Libraries.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cProviding opportunities for students is very important to me,\u201d says Roth. \u201cAnastasia\u2019s work is also an example of how the Libraries has ties across the university and lifts up other areas on campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one of those areas is the College of Nursing. Roth also serves on its Campaign Advisory Board and the Bernice Weede Havlicek Scholarship has supported more than 15 students since it was established in in 2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now as Roth reflects on her time serving as the LAC chair, she says she\u2019s looking forward to continuing to serve as a champion for the Libraries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt all comes back to the Libraries because everything is connected,\u201d says Roth. \u201cIt\u2019s about meeting students\u2019 needs while never losing sight of the past and traditions that brought us here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Christie Krugler, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is now serving as chair of the LAC and Linda \u201cLin\u201d Phillips, Norwalk, Iowa, is vice chair.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Council\u2019s next meeting is scheduled for October 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC_4450-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6795 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC_4450-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC_4450-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC_4450-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC_4450-scaled.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>The LAC recognized Roth\u2019s service as chair during its spring 2024 meeting.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her honor, the Libraries added to Special Collections a copy of Lippincott\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/primo-explore\/fulldisplay?docid=01IOWA_ALMA21352789880002771&amp;vid=01IOWA&amp;search_scope=default_scope&amp;tab=default_tab&amp;lang=en_US&amp;context=L\"><em>Hand-book of Nursing for Family and General Use<\/em><\/a>, one of the first manuals of nursing printed as the career was codified in the late 19th century. A <a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/permalink\/f\/9i2ftm\/01IOWA_ALMA21913065130002771\">poster encouraging young women to join<\/a> the United States Cadet Nurses Corp, a WWII entity that saw over 100,000 women join the profession and war effort, was also added.
