{"id":6599,"date":"2024-04-04T13:14:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T18:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/?p=6599"},"modified":"2024-11-05T16:14:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T22:14:34","slug":"ui-hardin-library-celebrating-fourth-floor-renovations-to-improve-user-experience-and-50-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/04\/ui-hardin-library-celebrating-fourth-floor-renovations-to-improve-user-experience-and-50-years\/","title":{"rendered":"UI Hardin Library to celebrate 50 years and fourth floor renovations to improve user experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hardin Library for the Health Sciences<\/a> at the University of Iowa Libraries is recognizing two milestones in May 2024: the completion of a major renovation to its fourth floor, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/16\/john-martin-rare-book-room-expanding-receiving-new-reading-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Martin Rare Book Room<\/a>, and serving students, faculty, and staff for 50 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction started in October 2022\u202fto convert the fourth floor into a more welcoming space that better meets the evolving needs of students, faculty, and staff. Improvements include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Expanding quiet study space by removing unneeded stacks&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upgrading the furniture in the study space&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modernizing individual study rooms by upgrading work surfaces, adding sound-dampening, and installing white boards&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>These transformational changes allow us to continue helping students thrive, graduate, and launch their careers as well as support the success of our faculty,\u201d says John Culshaw, Jack B. King university librarian. \u201cThis renovation was made possible by a generous grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. We are extremely grateful for the Trust\u2019s continued partnership in supporting the work of the UI Libraries.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The John Martin Rare Book Room houses nearly 6,500 volumes of original works that represent classic contributions to the history of the health sciences from the 15th through the 21st centuries. The area, also on the Hardin Library\u2019s fourth floor, received a new, separate reading room which provides expanded capacity for researcher access to books and space for hosting classes and events. There is also new shelving space in the room, helping to maintain the security and preservation of all JMRBR materials. These updates were made possible through support from the Friends of the Libraries and other philanthropic sources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have one of the premiere history of medicine collections\u202fof printed books in the United States and are grateful to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/rare-book-room\/dr-john-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. John Martin<\/a>, whose gift more than 50 years ago constitutes its core,\u201d says Damien Ihrig, curator for the John Martin Rare Book Room. \u201cThe updates allow us to increase the engagement outreach on campus and the larger community. This, in addition to our growing digital presence, continues to make the collection accessible to even more people in Iowa and around the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Sciences Library opened in May 1974 and was renamed the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences in honor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/drhardin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Robert C. Hardin<\/a>, whose career spanned more than five decades at Iowa,\u202fin 1989. It supports the information needs of the:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Departments of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Health and Human Physiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It also serves as the research library for the University of Iowa Hospitals &amp; Clinics. The Hardin Library\u2019s distinct brutalist style was designed by architect Walter Netsch.
