How do you learn where the highest percentage of people who purchase Boca Burgers live in Cook County?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you are working with an elder services agency in Des Moines and would like to provide computer classes for senior citizens across the state, but the question is where would be the best place to hold the classes?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is in <a href=\"http:\/\/proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/simplymap.com\/index.php\">Simply Map<\/a>. SimplyMap is a web-based mapping application that lets you quickly create professional-quality thematic maps and reports, using the thousands of US demographic, business and marketing data variables.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-564\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireesiniowa.jpg\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-564 \" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireesiniowa.jpg\" alt=\"Dark blue indicates where there is a high number of retired people.\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireesiniowa.jpg 452w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireesiniowa-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireesiniowa-433x300.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dark blue indicates counties with a high number of retired people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What Information Does Simply Map Contain?<br \/>\n<\/strong>SimplyMap contains thousands of socio-demographic, business and marketing variables.\u00a0 Data comes from US government sources (Census, Labor Statistics, e.g.), as well as Market and Quality of Life data from EASI Inc., and Dun &amp; Bradstreet \u201cPoints of Interest\u201d data.<\/p>\n<p>Most data sets are available down to the block group level, a geographic level used by the Census Bureau that is smaller than zip codes, although there is zip code data also.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Does Simply Map Do?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Maps can be created and saved within the program, then made into Powerpoint slides, added to Word documents, put on the web, etc.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-567\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/128.255.6.211\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireeswcomputers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-567\" src=\"http:\/\/128.255.6.211\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireeswcomputers.jpg\" alt=\"Dark red shows counties with a high number of retired people AND where over two-thirds of the households own a computer.\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireeswcomputers.jpg 452w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireeswcomputers-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2008\/10\/retireeswcomputers-423x300.jpg 423w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dark red shows counties with a high number of retired people AND where over two-thirds of the households own a computer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Custom data tables can be created then exported in Excel spreadsheet format, and can also be downloaded as shapefiles-with-data that can then be put into a desk-top mapping program, such as ESRI\u2019s ArcMap.\u00a0\u00a0 Maps can then be created in ArcMap from SimplyMap\u2019s shapefiles-with-data, with no need to join the data to existing Arcmap tables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who Uses Simply Map?<\/strong><br \/>\nSimplyMap is of use to those interested in the demographics of large and small geographic areas of the US, e.g., sociologists, political scientists, journalists, business and marketing students and faculty.\u00a0 In addition, the data would be of use to life scientists who need background information for their demographic studies.\u00a0 SimplyMap includes 1980, 1990, and 2000 Census data, adjusted to 2000 census geographies, as well as 2006 and 2007 estimates and 2012 projections.\u00a0 1970 census data will be available in future, but will not be geographically adjusted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Do I Use Simply Map?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis resource is available to individuals affiliated with the University of Iowa.\u00a0 To use SimplyMap, type \u201csimplymap\u201d into the Smart Search box on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\">Libraries website <\/a>(if you&#8217;re off campus, you&#8217;ll need to type in your HawkID and password).\u00a0You can create a personal workspace by clicking\u00a0 on &#8220;Create Personal Workspace&#8221; and entering your e-mail address and a password.
