It brought new fictional works from Virginia Woolf, A. A. Milne, Edith Wharton, Herman Hesse, and Franz Kafka. It gave us audio hits including Irving Berlin\u2019s \u201cPuttin\u2019 on the Ritz\u201d and the soundtrack to Ira and George Gershwin\u2019s <em>Funny Face. <\/em>Movie audiences saw (and heard) the first \u201ctalkie\u201d film, and Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s first thriller kept viewers on the edge of their seats. And as of January 1, all of these works are now available in the public domain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a work enters the public domain, the public no longer needs to seek the artist&#8217;s permission to copy or use the work. This opens the door for creative riffs on the classics, and makes public domain materials available free of charge.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some places to check out the newly available creative works from 1927 available in the public domain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/ls?a=srchls;c=600819322;q1=*\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hathi Trust Digital Library<\/a> \u2013 These materials from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Books\">Google Books Project<\/a>&nbsp;have been digitized for years, but as of January 1, the full-text is now available to everyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/web.law.duke.edu\/cspd\/publicdomainday\/2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for the Study of Public Domain<\/a> \u2013 Duke\u2019s Public Domain Day page has some great selected highlights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/blog\/2023\/01\/public-domain-day-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Public Domain Review<\/a> \u2013 This journal specializes in mining the public domain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The UI Libraries Catalog<\/a> \u2013 Search InfoHawk+ to find digital versions of public domain works.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in finding out more about U.S. copyright law and how to determine a work\u2019s copyright status?
