{"id":4591,"date":"2021-03-04T09:22:54","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T15:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/?p=4591"},"modified":"2023-08-05T21:10:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T02:10:31","slug":"celebrating-open-education-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/04\/celebrating-open-education-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Open Education Week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openeducationweek.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Open Education Week<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(March 1-5, 2021<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">#OEWeek<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) is a time&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;educators<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;around the world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;come together to learn&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and share practices around<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_educational_resources\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/openpedagogy.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Open Pedagogy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. While there are a host of&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openeducationweek.org\/schedule\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">excellent webinars and events<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;to tune into this week,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">let\u2019s also celebrate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our local faculty who are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">creating&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">openly licensed resources<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, tailor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;existing&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OER<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;to better fit the needs of their students,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;creat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;courses with fewer barriers to learning.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Integrating OER into a course takes a lot of work,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">times uncompensated.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But the result is well worth it. Students&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;access their course materials&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for free<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, from the first day of class. Ideally, the materials have been&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chosen and tailored to better&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">align with the needs of the class<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and they can be adapted easily if something isn\u2019t working.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">OER Projects Underway<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UI Libraries supports faculty and graduate students working on OER projects through&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/openhawks\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">OpenHawks grant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> There are currently 27 UI grant teams who are working on or have recently completed OER projects as part of this three-year pilot.
