On the heels of its\u00a0<\/span>recent arrangement with PLOS<\/span><\/a>, the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) has\u00a0<\/span>entered into<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a second contract<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to bundle the cost of journal subscriptions and Open Access (OA) publishing, this time with publisher, Cambridge University Press.\u00a0<\/span>Under this agreement<\/span>, UI\u00a0<\/span>corresponding\u00a0<\/span>authors<\/span>\u00a0can publish their\u00a0<\/span>journal articles\u00a0<\/span>OA<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>free of cost to them,\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>any of Cambridge\u2019s journals<\/span><\/a>.* These<\/span>\u00a0articles can<\/span>\u00a0then<\/span>\u00a0be read by anyone, anywhere, without the paywalls that traditionally accompany academic journals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This arrangement is part of a larger effort by UI Libraries and the BTAA to reduce the cost of OA for individual <\/span>researchers<\/span>. <\/span>Unfortunately, p<\/span>ublishers <\/span>often<\/span> charge authors directly to pay for the cost of publishing OA <\/span>journal<\/span> articles<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>For instance, <\/span>Cambridge <\/span>normally charges $2,520<\/span><\/a> per article for OA.) <\/span>For faculty who don\u2019t have grant or departmental funding, <\/span>this <\/span>can<\/span> be prohibitively expensive<\/span>. These costs have <\/span>soared<\/span> in recent years and are a significant barrier to making research open and freely accessible.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Libraries continue to <\/span>sign these types of<\/span> <\/span>transformative<\/span> agreements<\/span><\/a>, our hope is that more and more of our faculty will be able to publish their research <\/span>OA without fees. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
