{"id":298,"date":"2007-10-09T10:06:57","date_gmt":"2007-10-09T16:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/09\/an-endangered-river-runs-through-us-three-iowa-river-journeys\/"},"modified":"2013-10-30T10:09:13","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:09:13","slug":"an-endangered-river-runs-through-us-three-iowa-river-journeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/09\/an-endangered-river-runs-through-us-three-iowa-river-journeys\/","title":{"rendered":"An Endangered River Runs Through Us:  Three Iowa River Journeys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REGISTER NOW: IOWA RIVER BUS TOUR ON OCTOBER 19<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Register at <a href=\"mailto:cory-sanderson@uiowa.edu\">cory-sanderson@uiowa.edu<\/a> or 319 353-1021<\/p>\n<p>Friday, October 19, is the first of three events focused on the Iowa River, declared endangered by the organization American Rivers.\u00a0 Each event is a guided bus tour of the river with site visits along the way, followed by a reading\/lecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/ictcs\/id\/664\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/ictcs\/id\/664\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/news\/files\/2007\/10\/iowariver-19181.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"iowariver-19181.jpg\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>On the 19th, the bus leaves the south side of the UI Main Library at 3pm headed towards the Clear Creek Project of IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering at South Amana.\u00a0 With the help of docent Wayne Petersen of the US Conservation Service, those on the tour will follow the course of the river upstream to the Greenbelt and then to the operable hydropower dam at Iowa Falls (est. 1925).\u00a0 A box supper will be served along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Ted Steinberg, Adeline Barry Davee Distinguished Professor of History and Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University, reads at 7pm in the Iowa Falls Public Library.\u00a0 Steinberg is author of Nature Incorporated:\u00a0 Industrialization and the Waters of New England, Acts of God:\u00a0 The Unnatural History of Natural Disaster, and Down to Earth:\u00a0 Nature\u2019s Role in American History.\u00a0 You can learn more about him at\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.case.edu\/artsci\/hsty\/steinberg.html\">http:\/\/www.case.edu\/artsci\/hsty\/steinberg.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required for the bus tour and box supper.
