{"id":3092,"date":"2022-09-28T19:10:16","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T19:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/needtoknow\/?p=3092"},"modified":"2022-10-04T17:00:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T17:00:37","slug":"how-to-set-up-endnote-to-find-full-text","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/needtoknow\/2022\/09\/28\/how-to-set-up-endnote-to-find-full-text\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Set Up EndNote To Find Full Text"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is how to set up EndNote to find full text so you can save entire articles in your library.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>To set up Find Full Text<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the Edit menu, select Preferences.<\/li>\n<li>Click on Find Full Text.<\/li>\n<li>In the Open URL Path box, enter:&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/openurl\/01IOWA\/01IOWA_SERVICES\">https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/openurl\/01IOWA\/01IOWA_SERVICES<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you are using EndNote from off-campus, you will need to enter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/\">https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu<\/a> beside the box labeled Authentication URL.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE: &nbsp;It is advised that you do not select the box \u201cautomatically invoke find full text on newly imported references\u201d that appears at the bottom of the box. Attaching full text for all references is often unnecessary and will interfere with use of library during the process.<\/p>\n<p><u>Find Full Text<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select the desired references in your EndNote Library.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Right click<\/strong> and then select&nbsp;<strong>Find Full Text<\/strong>&nbsp;from the pop-up menu.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK on the copyright notice. EndNote will begin looking for full-text and will track its progress in the blue side panel.<\/li>\n<li>When EndNote finds a PDF, a paperclip appears in the attachment column, and the PDF appears in the File Attachments field of the reference. Click on the PDF to open the article. PDFs are stored in the Endnote library\u2019s .data file, in a folder called PDF.<\/li>\n<li>If EndNote can only find an HTML version of the article, a link to that version appears in the reference\u2019s URL field.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><u>Enable UI Link<\/u><\/p>\n<p>By enabling UI Link in EndNote, you can easily get to the full-text of an article from the EndNote record<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the&nbsp;<strong>Edit<\/strong>&nbsp;menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Preferences.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>URLS and Links.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Paste the following into the box labeled&nbsp;<strong>ISI Base URL:&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.isiknowledge.com\/gateway\/Gateway.cgi\">https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.isiknowledge.com\/gateway\/Gateway.cgi<\/a><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You can now click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To use UI Link, click on a record, then go to the&nbsp;<strong>References<\/strong>&nbsp;menu and select&nbsp;<strong>URL<\/strong>&nbsp;and then&nbsp;<strong>OpenURL Link<\/strong>. Use UI Link to find full text, or to launch an interlibrary loan request, if the item is not available electronically.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Mac<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><u>Set up EndNote to Find Full-Text<\/u><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>EndNote can attempt to locate the full text (PDF or HTML) of articles in your library. Full text availability is limited to journals to which the UI Libraries subscribe electronically and for which full text is available. If the Find Full-Text function does not locate a given article, try the UILink option below. (<strong>NOTE: this service produces error messages when used off-campus. Clicking either \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d on error messages and signing in when you see the login screen should allow this to work from off-campus)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To set up Find Full Text:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the EndNote menu, select <strong>Preferences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>Find Full Text<\/strong>&nbsp;in the left frame.<\/li>\n<li>In the Open URL Path box, enter:&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/openurl\/01IOWA\/01IOWA_SERVICES\">https:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/openurl\/01IOWA\/01IOWA_SERVICE<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you are using EndNote from off-campus, you will need to enter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/\">https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu<\/a>&nbsp;beside the box labeled&nbsp;<strong>Authentication URL<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>To find full-text:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select the desired references in your EndNote Library.<\/li>\n<li>From the&nbsp;<strong>References<\/strong>&nbsp;menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Find Full Text<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>&nbsp;on the copyright notice. PDFs are stored in the Endnote library\u2019s .data file, in a folder called PDF.<\/li>\n<li>If EndNote can only find an HTML version of the article, a link to that version appears in the reference\u2019s URL field.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>By enabling InfoLink in EndNote, you can easily get to the full-text of an article from the EndNote record, without attaching the PDF.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Enable UI Link<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the&nbsp;<strong>EndNote <\/strong>menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Preferences<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>URLS and Links<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the box labeled ISI Base URL, copy and paste this into the field:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.isiknowledge.com\/gateway\/Gateway.cgi\">https:\/\/login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.isiknowledge.com\/gateway\/Gateway.cgi<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>To use UI Link, select a record, then go to the&nbsp;<strong>References<\/strong>&nbsp;menu and select&nbsp;<strong>URL<\/strong>&nbsp;and then&nbsp;<strong>OpenURL Link<\/strong>. The UI Link window should appear.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Linking PDFs or Other Files to EndNote<\/em>&nbsp;<em>References<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, EndNote won\u2019t be able to locate a PDF.&nbsp; In that case, if you have the PDF, you can manually attach it.&nbsp; You can also attach other types of files to citations.&nbsp; The file can be on your own computer or on the Internet.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the reference to which you wish to link.<\/li>\n<li>To link to a file on your computer, select a citation, go to the&nbsp;<strong>References&nbsp;<\/strong>menu and choose&nbsp;<strong>File Attachments&nbsp;<\/strong>and then<strong>&nbsp;Attach File\u2026<\/strong>.
