Together, with an accurate and concise discourse of the heart, and its use, as also of the circulation of the blood, and the parts of which the sanguinary mass is made and framed, written by the late Dr. Lower<\/em><\/a>. Printed by Thomas Milbourn for the author in 1697. 53 cm tall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/0dab7d19-1682-4ab0-8c24-34e9ed820b5f?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Browne<\/a>&nbsp;<span dir=\"auto\">(1642-1700)<\/span>&nbsp;was a 17th-century&nbsp;<span dir=\"auto\">English surgeon and anatomist. He was royal surgeon<\/span>&nbsp;to Charles II, James II, and William III. Under Charles II, Browne first came to observe the &#8220;King&#8217;s Evil,&#8221; or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/29d2d458-bd8c-4109-a438-966f79989461?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrofula&nbsp;<\/a>(cervical lymphadenitis), a disease related to tuberculosis that inflames and swells lymph nodes in the neck. Some thought that the touch of royalty could heal the disease, and Charles II performed many of these ceremonies. Browne vividly described the disease and ceremonies in his&nbsp;<span dir=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/8d228ee0-00e9-48c4-ba39-aba0f65ddc2f?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Adenochoiradelogia<\/em><\/a>, printed in 1684.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">With a recommendation from the King, Browne was appointed a surgeon at St. Thomas&#8217;s Hospital in 1683, where he trained. The Governors who oversaw the hospital, led by the Whig politician&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/f7aaff22-c79b-4c99-a674-45468b091d19?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Robert Clayton<\/a>, disliked the freewheeling behavior of its surgical staff. The surgeons at St. Thomas felt unburdened by hospital policy because of their support by the King. However, Clayton and the Governors saw it differently and in 1691 dismissed the entire surgical staff, including Browne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">However, Browne was most well known as a serial plagiarizer and shrewd businessman. Most famously, Browne borrowed directly from the works of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/ff1d5bc6-aa43-4662-a548-931bd73c7941?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giulio Casseri&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/cf7b4a06-19c0-4651-8cf3-9a32b57fd516?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Molins<\/a>&nbsp;for his 1675 and 1681 editions of,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/ef584ad7-c671-42c7-ae52-17c8fbe6f7b1?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A compleat treatise of the muscles, as they appear in humane body, and arise in dissection<\/em><\/a>. Fellow surgeon and author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/9d73a0d4-e678-4991-b4a5-a4cd61fd3d3b?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Yonge<\/a>&nbsp;heavily criticized Browne for his literary poaching.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In response, in 1697, Browne put together this book, a<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;work that exemplified his approach to writing and selling books: he made a few tweaks to&nbsp;<em>A compleat treatise&#8230;<\/em> and released it under a new title.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mj-column-per-50 mj-outlook-group-fix\">\n<table role=\"presentation\" border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><span dir=\"auto\">Browne tweaked a few things in&nbsp;<em>Mygraphia nova<\/em>&nbsp;in an attempt to distance himself from accusations of plagiarizing the works of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/ff1d5bc6-aa43-4662-a548-931bd73c7941?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giulio Casseri&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/cf7b4a06-19c0-4651-8cf3-9a32b57fd516?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Molins<\/a>, most notably in the illustrations. Many of Casseri&#8217;s illustrations are somewhat whimsical, with lounging poses or those with movement, with the subject of the dissection often helpfully holding back layers of skin or muscle on their own bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The illustrations shown here demonstrate such a pose and the kinds of small changes Browne made from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/db6348a6-4f65-4a73-b500-f6083b37e859?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A compleat treatise&#8230;<\/em><\/a> &nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>Mygraphia nova<\/em>. Browne&#8217;s defenders wished to credit him with the innovation of directly labeling tissues, rather than with a letter or number referenced in the text<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;font-size: inherit\">. This too, however, was a technique lifted from others, including Casseri and Molins.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mj-column-per-50 mj-outlook-group-fix\">\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Interestingly, he added a very short section on the heart as a muscle in the 1697 edition but directed the reader to an appendix that contained the well-known work of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.uiowa.edu\/l\/8021ecf1-512a-47ab-a115-61e3850c4f25?m=0bb41fad-6e0d-43ba-bfbf-43d947270745&amp;c=d.library.hardin&amp;i=202202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Lower<\/a>. He gave Lower full credit in the title, perhaps artfully exploiting Lower&#8217;s name recognition. Browne&#8217;s works were relatively popular and printed in several editions, including after his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2903\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2903\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/needtoknow\/files\/2022\/03\/Browne_1697_cover_composite_sm.jpg\" alt=\"picture of binding\" width=\"400\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/needtoknow\/files\/2022\/03\/Browne_1697_cover_composite_sm.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/needtoknow\/files\/2022\/03\/Browne_1697_cover_composite_sm-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The binding consists of contemporary leather with a deep brown color and a blind tooled (no color or gilt added) design on the front and back boards. It has raised spine bands with &#8220;Browne on the muscles&#8221; stamped in gilt over a red compartment on spine. The leather is quite cracked and the front and back hinges are loose, but it has been treated by our master conservation team and is stable for use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Other than some browning at the front and back, more than likely due to exposure to the elements and the glue on the boards, the paper is in great condition.
