{"id":330,"date":"2021-10-17T16:48:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-17T16:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/gallery\/?p=330"},"modified":"2022-04-08T19:50:56","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T19:50:56","slug":"ui-libraries-presents-series-of-literary-events-during-2021-iowa-city-book-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/gallery\/2021\/10\/17\/ui-libraries-presents-series-of-literary-events-during-2021-iowa-city-book-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"UI Libraries Presents Series of Literary Events During 2021 Iowa City Book Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Iowa\u2019s Main Library will be a busy hub of four unique offerings on Saturday, October 23 during this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowacitybookfestival.org\/\">Iowa City Book Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All are welcome to attend an open house in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/sc\/\">Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/a>, a talk by guest author Laura Gellott, a guided tour of the Main Library Gallery\u2019s current exhibition about Dostoevsky, and a Riverside Theatre performance of Dostoevsky\u2019s <em>The Grand Inquisitor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our community returns to more in-person gatherings, we thought hosting a small set of events over the course of the afternoon would make it easy for community members to come to the UI&#8217;s Main Library and enjoy different types of programming,\u201d says John Culshaw, the UI\u2019s Jack B. Photo: Sara Pinkham.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>About the events<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Open House \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/news-and-events\/event\/?id=76021\">Reading through the Roarin\u2019 20s<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, an open house event, will take place in <strong>Special Collections &amp; Archives on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> floor of the Main Library<\/strong> from <strong>1:00 PM \u2013 4:00 PM<\/strong>. The book inspired Gellott\u2014professor emeritus of history at the University of Wisconsin \u2013 Parkside (Kenosha)\u2014to pursue a lifetime of teaching and European travel. Gellott&#8217;s book traces Helen Perry Curtis\u2019s life from its Nebraska roots to New Jersey and New York and across the European continent in the 1930s. She tells the story of the real-life travels behind <em>Jean &amp; Company<\/em>. The exhibit celebrates the life and works of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/news-and-events\/event\/?id=75916\"><strong>Barker will be giving a guided tour of this exhibition<\/strong> <strong>at 4:00 PM<\/strong><\/a> as part of the Iowa City Book Festival.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Live Performance<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>Riverside Theatre will be performing <a href=\"https:\/\/riversidetheatre.org\/the-grand-inquisitor\/\"><em>The Grand Inquisitor<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, a short play based upon the most famous chapter of Dostoevsky\u2019s novel <em>The Brothers Karamazov<\/em>, at <strong>7:30 PM in the Main Library Gallery<\/strong>. Tickets are free but must be reserved ahead of time at <a href=\"https:\/\/riversidetheatre.org\/the-grand-inquisitor\/\">RiversideTheatre.org<\/a>. Information about additional show dates can also be found on the Riverside Theatre website.\n<p>\u201cThe Book Festival is always a great way for us to share our resources and highlight authors to the community as a whole,\u201d says Culshaw. \u201cAs a public institution, community engagement is an important part of the UI and the UI Libraries&#8217; missions.
