{"id":798,"date":"2014-04-07T13:12:47","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T13:12:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/?p=798"},"modified":"2014-04-15T15:57:08","modified_gmt":"2014-04-15T15:57:08","slug":"leonardo-da-vince-the-engineer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/leonardo-da-vince-the-engineer\/","title":{"rendered":"Leonardo da Vinci the Engineer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/Leonardo-Da-Vincis-inventions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-800 alignleft\" alt=\"Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/Leonardo-Da-Vincis-inventions-300x120.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/Leonardo-Da-Vincis-inventions-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/Leonardo-Da-Vincis-inventions.jpg 355w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Come see the exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci: The Engineer at the Lichtenberger Engineering Library.\u00a0 The exhibit includes models of some of his engineering feats: \u00a0a catapult and a multiple sling designed as war machines to hurl stones, a paddleboat and a great kite.\u00a0 Stop by and see pictures of his underwater breathing machine, a steam cannon, a gigantic crossbow and the Vitruvian man.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the exhibit case are facsimiles from the University\u2019s Special Collections of da Vinci\u2019s original manuscripts printed from the collection of the Institute de France.\u00a0 Twelve manuscripts written between 1492 and 1516 were brought back to Italy by Francesco Melzi, his favorite pupil, after da Vinci\u2019s death.\u00a0 These facsimiles feature over five thousand pages of drawings and notes in his characteristic &#8220;mirror-image&#8221; hand-writing, running from right. The sections on display in the case are those related to:\u00a0 the military art, optics, geometry, the flight of birds and hydraulics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-799 alignright\" alt=\"300px-Da_Vinci_Vitruve_Luc_Viatour\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/300px-Da_Vinci_Vitruve_Luc_Viatour-220x300.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/300px-Da_Vinci_Vitruve_Luc_Viatour-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2014\/04\/300px-Da_Vinci_Vitruve_Luc_Viatour.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of Da Vinci\u2019s famous drawings is of the Vitruvian Man, a drawing created in 1490, is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius and Book III of his treatise De Architectura.\u00a0 Vitruvius the architect\u00a0described the human body with having ideal proportions.\u00a0 The drawing, pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in a square within a circle.\u00a0 The drawings sometimes referred to as the \u201cProportions of Man,\u201d and named in honor of the architect Vitruvius, represent da Vinci\u2019s blend of art and science.\u00a0 <i>Encyclopaedia Brittanica<\/i> online states that da Vinci \u201cbelieved the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ee\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those of you interested in hydraulics may know about Enzo Macagno.\u00a0 In 1960, Macagno became interested in studies of the history of fluid mechanics and the life of da Vinci.\u00a0 Along with his colleague and late wife, Matilde, Macagno became an international expert on da Vinci, publishing numerous articles and IIHR monographs on the interpretation, analysis, and synthesis of da Vinci\u2019s codices and manuscripts as they relate to fluid-flow and transport phenomena.\u00a0 You will find more information in the exhibit case and two monographs from Special Collections on Macagno\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a sampling of what can be seen at the Lichtenberger Engineering Library\u2019s Leonardo Da Vinci: The Engineer exhibit.
