The American Library Association (ALA) reports that more than 11,300 books have been challenged since then.\u00a0According to the ALA, <em>&#8220;A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. The number of challenges reflects only incidents reported. We estimate that\u00a0for every\u00a0reported challenge, four or five remain unreported.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2723\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2015\/09\/BannedBooks_Undated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2723 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2015\/09\/BannedBooks_Undated-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"Banned Book Week September 27 - October 3, 2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2015\/09\/BannedBooks_Undated-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2015\/09\/BannedBooks_Undated.jpg 521w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Banned Book Week September 27 through October 3, 2015<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Office for Intellectual Freedom recorded\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/frequentlychallengedbooks\/top10#2013\" target=\"_blank\">311 challenges<\/a>\u00a0 in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few\u00a0books of interest to\u00a0Engineering and Science that have been banned at one time or another:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Banned in 17th Century Europe: \u00a0Any writing or discussion demonstrating the heliocentric nature of the universe.<\/li>\n<li>Writings by Physicist and Astronomer Galileo Galilei: He was charged and convicted of heresy by the Inquisition in 1632 for writing, \u201cDialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems\u201d \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/infohawk.uiowa.edu\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=UIOWA&amp;request=001498806\" target=\"_blank\">Main\u00a0Library\u00a0QB41\u00a0.G1356 1967<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Banned in schools in Tennessee following the Butler Act of 1925: \u00a0Books and teaching materials on Darwinian evolution theory, including\u00a0<em>The Origin of Species<\/em> by Charles Darwin <a href=\"http:\/\/infohawk.uiowa.edu\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=UIOWA&amp;request=000234657\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Main\u00a0Library\u00a0QH365\u00a0.O2 1979<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Banned in Menifee School District, California: \u00a0Merriam-Webster\u2019s Collegiate Dictionary \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/infohawk.uiowa.edu\/F\/?func=find-b&amp;find_code=SYS&amp;local_base=UIOWA&amp;request=001142363\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Hardin Library For Health Sci\u00a0Library\u00a0PE1628\u00a0W4M4 1993<\/a>\u00a0banned for having definitions that were too explicit.<\/li>\n<li>Banned in\u00a0the United States for being too accurate in its scientific initiative:\u00a0The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments, written in 1960 by Robert Brent and illustrated by Harry Lazarus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many books which are considered classics have also been targets of challenges and attempts to ban them.
