{"id":2326,"date":"2003-03-18T12:16:26","date_gmt":"2003-03-18T17:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/preservation\/?p=2326"},"modified":"2003-03-18T12:16:26","modified_gmt":"2003-03-18T17:16:26","slug":"ui-libraries-helps-teach-preservation-of-cultural-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/2003\/03\/18\/ui-libraries-helps-teach-preservation-of-cultural-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"UI Libraries Helps Teach Preservation Of Cultural Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The University of Iowa Libraries<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>NEWS RELEASES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>University of Iowa News  Release<\/p>\n<p>Release: March 18, 2003<\/p>\n<p><strong>UI Libraries Helps Teach Preservation Of Cultural Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several University of Iowa librarians will help document managers from across  Iowa learn how to preserve important papers and materials in a series of  lectures and workshops offered by the Iowa Conservation and Preservation  Consortium.<\/p>\n<p>The program, titled &#8220;Preservation 101,&#8221; is designed for archivists,  conservators, county clerks, curators, genealogists, librarians, museum workers,  registrars, volunteers, and anyone else who cares about conserving and  preserving our cultural heritage. Six lectures will be offered via the Iowa  Communications Network (ICN), along with three hands-on practicum workshops. The  first two sessions will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. April 2 and May 22 at 18 ICN  sites.<\/p>\n<p>The April 2 session will focus on preservation considerations and cautions  about paper, ink, adhesives, and leather. The May 22 session will cover  photographic, reprographic and printing processes. The training program is  projected to conclude in June 2004.<\/p>\n<p>University of Iowa Libraries&#8217; Nancy E Kraft, head of the Preservation  Department and Conservation Unit, is directing the preservation training  program. UI Libraries Conservator Gary Frost and UI Libraries Assistant  Conservator Kristin Baum, along with Iowa State University Library Conservator  Ivan Hanthorn, will teach the first session. Henry Wilhelm of Grinnell, Iowa,  one of the world&#8217;s leading authorities on the preservation of color photographic  images, will teach the May session.<\/p>\n<p>Preservation 101 is sponsored by the Iowa Conservation and Preservation  Consortium (ICPC), a membership organization seeking to initiate, encourage, and  enhance preservation and conservation activities by providing basic preservation  education and training. Funding for developing the preservation training program  was partially supported through funding from the Resource Enhancement and  Protection (REAP) act through a Historical Resource Development Program  (REAP\/HRDP) grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>Each ICN session registration fee is $20.  Discounts are available for groups, multiple sessions, and ICPC members.
