Reformatting Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, August 3, 2009<\/p>\n<p>Ongoing efforts to clean and flatten flood-affected archives manuscripts from the African American Museum of Iowa have turned up yet another form of adherograph deterioration.\u00a0(See June 30, 2009 entry)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1220\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_022.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_022.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_022-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>As seen in the example to the left, the powder medium that holds the adherograph text image has irreversibly adhered to the back of a preceding document page.\u00a0 Unable to separate the two, I decided to scan both pieces of the damaged document and then attempt to reunite them in Photoshop.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1221\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_032.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_032.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_032-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first step was to flip the fragment horizontally.\u00a0 Though only the back of the reversed\u00a0fragment text was visible through the adherograph medium, flipping it over digitally created a faint, though workable\u00a0positive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_04a2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1223\" style=\"margin-left:;margin-right: 40px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_04a2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_04a2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_04a2-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a>Note the altered color of the reunited fragment.\u00a0 Through a haphazard\u00a0process of tweaking color levels and saturations I was able to pull the text out, making it as legible as possible.\u00a0 After doing so, reducing the image from color to black and white serves to isolate the information from the discolored\u00a0document carrier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestore_04b1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1224\" style=\"margin-left: 30px;margin-right\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestore_04b1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestore_04b1.jpg 521w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestore_04b1-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestore_04b1-379x300.jpg 379w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0This detail, captured after converting document to black and white, shows that while the texture of the adherograph medium remains cumbersome, the information is again legible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_053.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1227\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_053.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_053.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_053-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/conservation\/files\/2009\/07\/digirestor_053-479x300.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This second example details another completed document as well as its original post-flood condition.\u00a0 While this process is probably too time consuming\u00a0in many situations, experimenting with the procedure was a valuable experience.\u00a0 Not only is there now a workflow for this in the future, but it also raises some interesting questions about disaster recovery, institutional resources, and policies pertaining to\u00a0discarding and
