{"id":6578,"date":"2017-06-30T20:42:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T20:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/?p=7276"},"modified":"2017-06-30T20:42:21","modified_gmt":"2017-06-30T20:42:21","slug":"meet-mirko-von-elstermann-biomedical-sciences-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/combo\/2017\/06\/30\/meet-mirko-von-elstermann-biomedical-sciences-librarian\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Mirko von Elstermann, Biomedical Sciences Librarian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"picture of Mirko von Elstermann\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-115x115.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7277\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"picture of Mirko von Elstermann\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Mirko von Elstermann began working at Hardin Library for the Health Sciences on May 31, 2017 as the Biomedical Sciences Librarian.<\/p>\n<p>Mirko von Elstermann grew up in Western Germany&#8217;s Cologne area. \u00a0Before moving to Iowa he was living in Lima, Peru with his Peruvian wife and their baby daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Mirko earned an M.A. in Philosophy and an M.Sc. in Biology from the University of Cologne. \u00a0In 2006 he graduated with a Ph.D. in Physiology; <a href=\"http:\/\/kups.ub.uni-koeln.de\/2074\/\">his thesis<\/a> was about the formation of a breast-cancer cell specific carbohydrate antigen.<\/p>\n<p>From 2006 to 2009 Mirko worked as an editor at Nature Publishing Group (London, UK) and for a short time at Wiley-VCH (Weinheim, Germany). \u00a0Until 2011 he was the subject librarian for molecular biology and medicine at Basel University Library\/Basel University Hospital in Switzerland, where he also studied library and information sciences. \u00a0In his LIS master&#8217;s thesis he discussed services and resources of a biomedical library in the future. \u00a0Next, Mirko worked briefly at The University of Veterinary Medicine (Hanover, Germany) before he resigned for private reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Later he moved to Lima (Peru) where he worked as a freelance editor, translator, and biomedical information provider. \u00a0During these years he also had a stint as the biosciences information librarian and managing editor of a medical education platform&#8211;<em>Innovations in Global Health Professions Education-<\/em>-at Weill Cornell Medicine in Doha (Qatar).<\/p>\n<p>Mirko is Hardin&#8217;s liaison to researchers and faculty of the basic sciences at the Carver College of Medicine&#8211;cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular physiology\/biophysics. \u00a0He also looks forward to supporting students of the College of Medicine&#8217;s graduate programs in genetics, immunology, molecular cell biology, and free radical and radiation biology. \u00a0Mirko enjoys reaching out to students and researchers from many different areas and supporting projects from inception to publication. \u00a0For several years he has used Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/biomedrevon\">@BiomedRevon<\/a> to highlight his own biomedical reading selections.<\/p>\n<p>Mirko and his family moved to Iowa City in May, 2017. \u00a0As Lima had an arid climate, they particularly enjoy exploring green areas for outdoor activities. \u00a0Besides swimming and walking, Mirko enjoys literature and music. \u00a0He agrees with Nietzsche&#8217;s saying &#8220;Life without music would be an error.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/files\/2017\/06\/Mirko-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"picture of Mirko von Elstermann\">Mirko von Elstermann began working at Hardin Library for the Health Sciences on May 31, 2017 as the Biomedical Sciences Librarian.
