Banned Books Week 2016<\/h3>\n

Banned Book Week\u00a0was launched in 1982 in order to bring attention to\u00a0a surge\u00a0of challenges that schools, bookstores and libraries were getting. The purpose is to highlight the value of free and open access to information and\u00a0the freedom to read. The American Library Association (ALA) reports that between 2000 and 2009, 5,099 challenges were made.\u00a0According to the ALA,\u00a0“A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. The number of challenges reflects only incidents reported. We estimate that\u00a0for every\u00a0reported challenge, four or five remain unreported.”<\/em><\/p>\n

New books are added every year – and some never make it off the list (Catcher in the Rye<\/em> and\u00a0To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em> are two examples). Many of the banned books are novels, but a number of science books have also been challenged.<\/p>\n
