The purpose is to highlight the value of free and open access to information and\u00a0the freedom to read. The American Library Association (ALA) reports that between 2000 and 2009, 5,099 challenges were made.\u00a0According to the ALA,\u00a0<em>&#8220;A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. The number of challenges reflects only incidents reported. We estimate that\u00a0for every\u00a0reported challenge, four or five remain unreported.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-Banned-Books-Week-400x250.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4611\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-Banned-Books-Week-400x250.png\" width=\"253\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-Banned-Books-Week-400x250.png 400w, http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-Banned-Books-Week-400x250-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>New books are added every year &#8211; and some never make it off the list (<em>Catcher in the Rye<\/em> and\u00a0<em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em> are two examples). Many of the banned books are novels, but a number of science books have also been challenged.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the many books related\u00a0to\u00a0Engineering and Science that have been banned at one time or another:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any writing or discussion demonstrating the heliocentric nature of the universe was banned in 17th Century Europe.<\/li>\n<li>Writings by physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei were banned and he was charged and convicted of heresy by the Inquisition in 1632 for writing, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:default_scope:01IOWA_ALMA21390686210002771\" >Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Books and teaching materials on Darwinian evolution theory, including\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:default_scope:01IOWA_ALMA21357255760002771\" >The Illustrated Origin of Species<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Charles Darwin\u00a0were banned in schools in Tennessee following the Butler Act of 1925.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Menifee School District in California banned<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:default_scope:01IOWA_ALMA21321903150002771\" >Merriam-Webster\u2019s Collegiate Dictionary<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0It was banned for having definitions that were too explicit.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments<\/em>, written in 1960 by Robert Brent and illustrated by Harry Lazarus was banned in\u00a0the United States for being too accurate in its scientific initiative.<\/li>\n<li>Books and materials on Mendelian genetics have been banned from publication in Soviet-era USSR<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are interested in exploring Leonardo da Vinci&#8217;s engineering works, check out\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.lib.uiowa.edu\/01IOWA:default_scope:01IOWA_ALMA21367821150002771\" >Doing da Vinci<\/a>.<\/em> Four builders and engineers attempt to build never-before-constructed inventions! da Vinci&#8217;s\u00a0armored tank, siege ladder, self-propelled carts and even a machine gun are featured on this 2-disc set!
