Has visual realism prompted game developers to make controversial narrative choices?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"font: 14px\/21px 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin: 0px 0px 1.25em;padding: 0px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Wednesday: \u201cVideo Games &amp; the Brain\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Michael Hall, UI faculty in psychology and neuroscience, will talk about research on video games and the brain, including areas of the brain activated by gaming, gaming\u2019s effect on the brain\u2019s pleasure centers, early data on whether gaming can be neuroprotective, and what too much gaming can do to the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"font: 14px\/21px 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin: 0px 0px 1.25em;padding: 0px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Thursday:\u00a0\u201cStereotypes &amp; Video Games\u201d<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Hannah Scates Kettler, UI Libraries Digital Scholarship &amp; Publishing Studio, will talk about stereotypes and gaming. Arguably more than any other media, video games challenge\/re-inscribe our notions about identity. Who gets to participate in gaming? What roles are gamers encouraged to adopt? Do video games promote more fiction than reality regarding military service?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"font: 14px\/21px 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin: 0px 0px 1.25em;padding: 0px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">This four-day event series is designed to: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\" style=\"font: 14px\/21px 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin: 0px 20px;padding: 0px 0px 1.5em;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">teach students how to engage in civil discourse about controversial issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">debunk common stereotypes of military life and wartime experiences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">use the popular video game \u201cCall of Duty\u201d as an entry point to discuss specific issues such as violence in media, stereotypes in gaming, the effect of life-like graphics on game content, and video games\u2019 effect on the brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">honor our veterans on Veteran\u2019s Day by encouraging all students to engage in discussions with veterans, get to know them, learn about their experiences and travels, discover how veterans\u2019 perspectives enrich our campus, and create a sense of campus community that includes our UI student veterans.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"font: 14px\/21px 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin: 0px 0px 1.25em;padding: 0px;color: #333333;text-indent: 0px;letter-spacing: normal;background-color: #ffffff\"><span class=\"s1\">Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events.
