{"id":3471,"date":"2014-11-24T15:32:48","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T15:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/transitions\/?p=1266"},"modified":"2014-11-24T15:32:48","modified_gmt":"2014-11-24T15:32:48","slug":"bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation-announce-new-open-access-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/combo\/2014\/11\/24\/bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation-announce-new-open-access-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announce new Open Access policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent post to it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.impatientoptimists.org\/Posts\/2014\/11\/Knowledge-is-Power\" >Impatient Optimists Blog<\/a>, the Gates Foundation states\u00a0&#8220;&#8230;we are adopting an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #9b242d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/How-We-Work\/General-Information\/Open-Access-Policy\" >Open Access (OA) policy<\/a>\u00a0to enable the unrestricted access and reuse of all peer-reviewed published research funded by the foundation, including any underlying data sets. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation went into further detail in an email to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparc.arl.org\/\" >SPARC<\/a> (<span style=\"color: #231f20\">the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition)<\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Our new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/How-We-Work\/General-Information\/Open-Access-Policy\"><strong>Open Access Policy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0goes into effect on January 1, 2015\u00a0 We are really excited to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.impatientoptimists.org\/Posts\/2014\/11\/Knowledge-is-Power\">make the research we fund<\/a>\u00a0more accessible to our grantees and researchers, policy makers, and to governments around the world.\u00a0 Our new\u00a0<strong>Open Access Policy<\/strong>\u00a0enables the unrestricted access and reuse of all peer-reviewed, published research, including underlying datasets.\u00a0 We join many other institutions in the Open Access movement, such as the Research Councils UK, the Wellcome Trust, the National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization.
