Politics in the Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/ike-day-napkin-upright.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-884 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/ike-day-napkin-upright-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"ike day napkin upright\" width=\"370\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the site of the Iowa caucuses as well as the home state of countless policy makers and political activists, Iowa is rich with electoral history. As we cast our votes today, we reflect on the decades of campaigning that has brought some of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2019s biggest political names to Iowa, as well as the effect of Iowans in shaping national political life. Above is a napkin from \u201cNational Ike Day,\u201d a 1956 event celebrating the 66<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of President Dwight Eisenhower. In a letter to event organizer <a href=\"http:\/\/collguides.lib.uiowa.edu\/?IWA0053\">Anna Cochrane Lomas<\/a> the next day, Eisenhower commented, \u201cI experienced the warm feeling that I was among good and true friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below are a few more letters and photos that tell stories of the connections between politics and Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/roosevelt-eleanor-to-wilma-belden-collins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-885 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/roosevelt-eleanor-to-wilma-belden-collins-300x284.jpg\" alt=\"roosevelt eleanor to wilma belden-collins\" width=\"300\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The work of Iowa newspaper columnist and editor <a href=\"http:\/\/collguides.lib.uiowa.edu\/?IWA0079\">Wilma Belden-Collins<\/a> caught the eye of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who wrote to her about the United Nations General Assembly. Following her husband\u2019s death, Roosevelt became the first chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and remained the U.S. representative to that Commission even after stepping down as chair in 1951, the year of the above letter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/bush-xmas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-881 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/bush-xmas-300x252.jpg\" alt=\"bush xmas\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iowa Women\u2019s Archives co-founder <a href=\"http:\/\/collguides.lib.uiowa.edu\/?IWA0027\">Mary Louise Smith<\/a> was the first woman to chair the Republican Party. Above is a card from the Bush family, written two years before George Herbert Walker Bush\u2019s first term as Vice-President to Ronald Reagan. During his own presidential campaign ten years later, Bush sent a letter to Smith, thanking her for her support: \u201cThere is no way I can properly express my gratitude \u2013 Barbara\u2019s, too. You worked hard, you stood at my side when the going got tough, and you were with me, your hand on my shoulder, when things looked very gloomy indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/clinton-gore-in-cr-1992.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-882 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/clinton-gore-in-cr-1992-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"clinton gore in cr 1992\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/hrc-note.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-883 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.uiowa.edu\/iwa\/files\/2014\/11\/hrc-note-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"hrc note\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The papers of state representative <a href=\"http:\/\/collguides.lib.uiowa.edu\/?IWA0263#series5\">Kathleen Halloran Chapman<\/a> capture a smiling moment with Bill Clinton during his campaign stop in Cedar Rapids in 1992. A handwritten note to professor <a href=\"http:\/\/collguides.lib.uiowa.edu\/?IWA0415\">Suzanne Bunkers<\/a> the following year comes from first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, and reads: \u201cThank you for sharing your ideas and suggestions. Bill and I welcome your thoughts. They will be carefully considered as Bill begins to implement his agenda for change in America.
