Dost Thou Speak Masterly: Iowa Reads Shakespeare<\/h3>\n

Step up to read Shakspeare and celebrate The Bard’s 400 Death Anniversary – Just like they did 100 years ago in Iowa City,<\/a>\u00a0or come and enjoy the show!<\/h3>\n

A century ago, Iowa City celebrated the\u00a0tercentenary of Shakespeare\u2019s death. In 1916, the world was at war, and, as always, the arts were a healing salve. People gathered, donned Shakespearean costumes, and paraded to City Park to hear readings from the Bard\u2019s plays.<\/p>\n

So here we are in 2016, celebrating\u00a0Shakespeare\u2019s quatercentenary.\u00a0We have planned to gather again in City Park. Interesting, isn\u2019t it, that a\u00a0public theatre-in-the-round now sits where Iowans observed\u00a0Shakespeare\u2019s last 100th birthday?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On September 24, 2016, we\u2019ll gather at the Riverside Festival Theatre to read Shakespeare. For inspiration, we recall the words of Duke Orsino in\u00a0Twelfth Night<\/i>\u00a0(Act II, Scene IV), \u201cThou dost speak masterly.\u201d<\/p>\n

SO, WE PUT IT TO YOU, FELLOW IOWANS: DOST THOU SPEAK MASTERLY? DO YOU LOVE READING SHAKESPEARE?<\/b>\u00a0Demonstrate your acting prowess at the closing event of\u00a0First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library<\/i>.<\/p>\n

No matter where you live, you participate by\u00a0voting for a favorite scene from Shakespeare\u2019s plays. The winning scene\u00a0will be featured along with\u00a0other\u00a0live readings of\u00a0Shakespeare by professionals, community members, and you! The event will also include a costume contest. Gather your troupe, choose your scene from Shakespeare\u2019s plays, and register to deliver your lines on the Riverside Festival Stage\u00a0at City Park in Iowa City.<\/p>\n

This event is part of\u00a0SHAKESPEARE AT IOWA<\/a>\u00a0(August 29 – December 30), a celebration hosted by the University of Iowa Libraries.\u00a0SHAKESPEARE AT IOWA<\/a>\u00a0includes\u00a0First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare<\/i>,\u00a0which is a national traveling exhibition organized by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC to commemorate the 400th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary in 2016 of Shakespeare\u2019s death. It is produced in association with the American Library Association and the Cincinnati Museum Center.\u00a0First Folio!<\/i>\u00a0has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor, and by the support of Google.org, Vinton and Sigrid Cerf, the British Council, Stuart and Mimi Rose, and other generous donors.<\/p>\n
