They stare<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">across the space at me sprawling on my bunk. I know<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">their dark eyes, they know mine. I know their style,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">they know mine. I am all of them, they are all of me;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">they are farmers, I am a thief, I am me, they are thee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"long-line\">I have at one time or another been in love with my mother,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">1 grandmother, 2 sisters, 2 aunts (1 went to the asylum),<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">and 5 cousins. I am now in love with a 7-yr-old niece<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">(she sends me letters in large block print, and<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">her picture is the only one that smiles at me).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"long-line\">I have the same name as 1 grandfather, 3 cousins, 3 nephews,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">and 1 uncle. The uncle disappeared when he was 15, just took<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">off and caught a freight (they say). He&#8217;s discussed each year<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">when the family has a reunion, he causes uneasiness in<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">the clan, he is an empty space. My father&#8217;s mother, who is 93<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">and who keeps the Family Bible with everbody&#8217;s birth dates<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">(and death dates) in it, always mentions him. There is no<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">place in her Bible for &#8220;whereabouts unknown.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poem\/my-father-retired-magician\"><em>My Father Is a Retired Magician<\/em> by Ntozake Shange (entire poem)<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup><em>(for ifa, p.t., &amp;
