Did you know that access to some scholarly journals can cost as much as buying a new car…every year? That is a price that UI Libraries cannot afford, but it is a research tool that YOU can’t afford to work without. So what do we do? Open Access: it means more readers, more recognition and more impact for new ideas.

We invite you to join us to hear Molly Kleinman, Special Assistant to the Dean of Libraries at the University of Michigan and a copyright specialist, talk about it: “Open Access or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the Internet” at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 20th in the Bijou at the Iowa Memorial Union.

This event is part of UI Libraries’ celebration of Open Access Week, October 19-23, 2009. Also that week, we’ll be posting more useful information about open access including our UI colleagues own experiences with open access.

For more information about scholarly communication and your role in creating a
sustainable system, check the Libraries website (www.lib.uiowa.edu/scholarly).

Co-sponsors of this event include the University of Iowa Libraries, Department of Communication Studies, Graduate Student Senate, the UI Center for Human Rights, College of Public Health, Widernet, Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students, and the Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry (POROI).

On Thuesday, November 18 (5:30 -6:30) The University of Iowa History of Medicine Society will hear a presentation by Craid Gibson, PhD, UI Associate Professor of Classics, speak on “Medical (Mal)practice in Greek and Roman Rhetoric.” Greek and Roman education made use of short essays and speeches to train students who needed credentials for the learned professions. Doctors turn up surprisingly often in these fictional exercises. In this presentation Professor Gibson brings together many of the texts involving doctors to discuss how and why ancient education found the figure of the doctor useful rhetorically, and what these texts might tell us about popular perceptions of doctors in ancient times.
The presentation will be held in the Information Commons West, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences. The Public is invited.

The UICHR’s One Community, One Book program, in conjunction with an expanded outreach to all first-year undergraduate students, will host a multitude of programming this semester to encourage a common reading and learning experience about human rights for all campus and community members.

The selected book this year, “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier”, is the memoir of a former child soldier, Ishmael Beah. Mr. Beah is now a world renowned activist on children’s rights.

Mr. Beah will visit campus as part of the program, in conjunction with the UI Lecture Committee series, to give a public lecture on October 29, 7:30 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Information about discussion forums, films and other opportunities for UI students, staff, faculty, alumni, and broader community member engagement, can be found at www.uichr.org.

Several Discussion Groups that might be of particular interest to the Hardin community include:

September 18, 11:30 am-1 pm, UIHC Patients’ Library, 8th JCP Solarium
October 22, 8:00 pm, UI Main Library, 2nd Floor Study Lounge
