The rich array of collaborative technologies now available has underscored the critical issue of who owns knowledge–a question that brings to light intellectual and practical challenges for university faculty members concerned about teaching and learning.
On Friday January 16, 2009 ITS-Instructional Services, the Center for Teaching, and the University of Iowa Libraries will host an event to explore the issues posed by the question “Who owns knowledge?” We will consider some of the teaching technologies that can widen the creation and sharing of knowledge as they also challenge instructors and students to possibly rethink their roles in the academy, education, and society.
If you are a faculty or staff member who teaches, please join us for 4CAST ‘09 The Open Academy: “Who Owns Knowledge?”
Events will include:
* small-group roundtable discussions
* posters by ITS staff and UI faculty members
* small group sessions for faculty members to showcase how they incorporate some of these teaching technologies into courses
* breakout sessions for “hands-on” technology training
Friday January 16, 8:45-3:30
Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided
University Conference Center 2520-D, Seminar Room
*To register please visit the 4CAST website at http://at.its.uiowa.edu/4cast or call 335-6048.
Recently, the new book, Understanding Health Policy: A Clinical Approach, 5th Edition, was added to the AccessMedicine, which is accessible through the Hardin Library homepage. The book covers everything there is to know in the health care world, from insurance companies to personal coverage.
Hurst’s Imaging Tests were also added to the AccessMedicine, which is a set of questions that corresponds to the book, Hurst’s The Heart, 12th Edition, which is also available on AccessMedicine. The test challenges those taking it to make diagnoses based on cardiac imaging and video clips.
The Hardin Library will be open until Midnight on Friday, December 12, Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14.
Free coffee will be available on Friday night, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The library is open an additional 13 hours this week!

The award was based on votes and comments from Pharmacy students and was awarded at the College’s annual reception held to honor scholarship recipients and Teacher of the Year award winners.

He teaches information use skills to students in the Pharmacy Practice Lab course sequence, creates customized resource guides on pharmacy topics, and selects pharmacy-related materials for the library’s collection.
