Iowa Go Local Grant Funded

Hardin Library, in partnership with the National Library of Medicine, has been awarded a grant to develop a Go Local website called Iowa Go Local. This website will be a permanent information resource for health services around the state, and will be linked to related topics in Medline Plus .

Elizabeth Nummela, a graduate student in the department of Library and Information Science, has been hired as technical manager of the Iowa Go Local site.

Longer hours begin August 27.

Monday, August 27 - Thursday, August 30 the library is open 7:30am - 12:00am.
Friday, August 31 the library is open 7:30am - 6pm.
Saturday, September 1 the library is open 10am - 2:00pm.
Sunday, September 2, the library is open Noon-4:00pm.

The library is closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 3.

Regular fall hours begin September 4:
Monday-Thursday         7:30am-12:00am
Friday                               7:30am-6:00pm
Saturday                         10:00am-6:00pm
Sunday                                 Noon-11:00pm

Information Commons Training and Systems Assistant
Hardin Library for the Health Sciences

Background: The Hardin Library Information Commons is a state of the art educational technology facility, featuring multimedia development workstations, hands-on computer classrooms, a group study, audiovisual materials and computer labs. The Information Commons also supports web development projects in the health sciences such as Iowa Public Health Information and Go Local Iowa. Position description: Reporting to the Assistant Director, Technology and Outreach, the Training and Systems Assistant supports the activities and services of the Information Commons. The Assistant provides on-demand technology support for instructors, students and other users of computer labs, classrooms and multimedia workstations; designs and teaches staff development sessions for Information Commons desk workers; creates and maintains equipment and software documentation; and assists the Technology Support Specialist with systems administration tasks.

The Training and Systems Assistant is required to work between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, two days per week and four additional hours as assigned. Some weekend and evening hours occasionally required.

Images.MD: 48,000 Images Available

The Hardin Library now subscribes to Images.MD, a database of more than 48,000 health-sciences related images. After filling out a simple registration form, you can develop your own image library, create PowerPoint presentations of images in your library, and order customized CD-ROMs of your favorite slides.

New-longer loans

Graduate students now get semester loans and undergraduate/merit/community get four week loans for books. 

Health professions (MD/medical, PharmD/pharmacy and DDS/dental) students are now classified as graduate students with semester-long loans.

Faculty continue to receive one year loans.  Loan periods for items previously checked out have not been changed, but will be applied if items are renewed.

Natural Standard Trial

From August 2nd to August 31st, the Hardin Library will be offering a trial of Natural Standard, a database focused on alternative and complementary therapies. Natural Standard provides evidence-based information on herbs and supplements and various health and wellness topics. The database also allows you to search for treatments by condition and to examine the contents of many brand-name supplements. The information is available in multiple forms, from in-depth monographs to easy-to-read patient handouts. Monographs are written and reviewed by contributors at more than 100 academic institutions world-wide. The Natural Standard Research Collaboration is an international, multidisciplinary research group founded by clinicians and researchers at Harvard Medical School and the University of California.

Interim Hours through August 26

The Hardin Library is open shorter hours for interim.   Hours are 7:30 am - 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am - 2pm Saturday, and Noon - 4pm Sunday.  Regular hours will resume August 27.
